K, thx for the opinions so far. Another question I'd like to pose though to those that dislike it (I'm not objecting you opinion, merely interested): do you feel the same way about other fads/trends in society (ie. emos, goths, stoners, etc.). If no, what makes the gangster/rap fad/trend different?Setsa
What makes the gangster fad different is it encourages things like i mentioned above; violence, objectifying women, et. The other trends don't do that. Emo's maybe glorify cutting - but not not near as many people fall into that trend. The "gangster" trend has become commonplace in poorer regions of the US - it's just the way things are. It is by far the most destructive trend. Stoner isn't a trend, its a byproduct of excessive marijuana use, and isn't destructive at all.
So... you are saying that you dislike how rap has evolved? How do you feel it has changed exactly in terms of the music iteself and the style? Do you think that its rise in popularity and the such overhyped it to the point where there was no more good music or...? (sorry for the barrage of questions, just really curious :P)A lot of the pop rap out there is nihilistic IMO. I liked the days when I heard rap and it was about some dude's experiences and thoughts, not some dork saying whatever comes into his head to hyping himself up.

I find it unnecessary, pointless, and stupid.PlasmaBeam44You find songs that talk about social problems, unnecessary, pointless, and stupid? Not all of them are like this, but a good chunk of real rap touches on social issues.
Also, some are pure poetry, like "You Never Know" by Immortal Technique.
I can't stand the subculture behind it. Drugs, violence, gangs, "bling", sagging pants, overall trying to be "gangsta". It's just stupid and promotes terrible things. Gangs are a horrible part of urban society and they just promote drugs, weapons trafficking, violence, etc. with their behavior.
However, I will acknowledge that there is a difference between "gangsta" culture and rap. As for the music, I just hate it for the music, regardless of the lyrics. The electronic beats and chanting (not even singing) and stuff just isn't for me. I don't see how it got so popular, but to each his own I suppose. I do think it goes into the realm of being bad when it has those
"gangsta" lyrics about disrespecting police and women, glorifying gangs, etc.
And to answer your question, I don't think emo, goth, stoners etc. is as bad because it doesn't glorify gangs and violence and such, but I do think that cosmetically, that stuff is ugly and the drugs and such they're associated with are bad things. However, there's not as much (if any) violence associated with them whereas guns and violence are very often associated with "gangstas". I dunno, I guess I don't have a huge problem with them, I just think their subculture is a bit weird and they need to get off the drugs (if they're on them, you can't assume all of them are on drugs).

And I'm not a fan of subgenres, although I see why people would use it. I'm really open-minded to any type of Rap music really.

The modern media has given rap a bad name I guess... There are a lot of good rappers out there that have meaningful messages in their work, but sadly they are outshined (popularity wise, in most cases) by those that utilize offensive lyrics, sex appeal, and mesmerizing images.the only rap i listen to bigge smalls not that soulja boy crap

**Warning Explicit Material**
Rule #1: If a band mentions their own name or the name of one of their own members in their songs with the purpose of pointing out how awesome they think they are, that band sucks. I'm sure there is an exception or two out there, but it's just a general rule of thumb.* ;)
*Live performances don't count.
Or let me put it this way: I despise blatant self-adoration in general, and rap seems to have quite a saturation of it.
Either way, I don't like the music with the exception of a few old songs like the famous Rapper's Delight. Even that I don't make any deliberate effort to listen to, but I'd actually rather listen to that than quite a bit of the rock songs on the radio.

I find it sad when someone has to dress act and listen to the same thing as everyone else in a group just to fit in.
I enjoy alot of old school rap music (Above the law, scarface, rundmc, Mac Dre, 2Pac, Digital Underground, Tribe Called Quest, KRSONE,NWA, Messy Marv etc..) but i kinda laugh at how so many people try to act gangster at times :P
Also all the younger kids these days are growing up with some terrible hiphop music like 50 cent and soulja boy, not all the music is like that
