Rap culture and "gangsters" are a rising social group in today's society and recently, I've been wondering just what people think about the rap culture. I am creating a variety of polls on differents sites (GS being one) in hopes of targetting different audiences and finding just what society thinks of rap. Feel free to voice your opinions and vote :D. Personally, I like some rap songs, but not the majority and I do not like the trends that have spawned from it, mostly because they appear to just be fads.

The music has one or two ok songs, but I HATE the culture. I hate seeing people walking in the mall with their pants pulled down so you can see half their boxers, and they're grabbing their crotch pretending to talk on the cell phone. I think it's one of the dumbest things.

No, its a terrible thing. It glorifies gang violence, drug use, objectifying women, etc. The only rap that I'll listen to on occasion is Immortal Technique as it actually has a message other than "drop out of school to become a thug."

I got into an argument with a pant-"sagging" gangster once, about how constantly pulling up your pants can go against you in a fight. I couldn't believe his logic, despite actually trying, to see his point of view.

I like hip-hop culture which rap is a part of along with DJing, Breakdancing and Graffiti art. That style of dress though isnt really "gangsta" or anything its merely a product of the enviroment in which they were created and respresentative of those aspects of urban culture. Personally I have grown to love rap and fully embrace it along with the culture. There are many different aspects to that culture and it would be a mistake to group it all into the same thing.

A lot of the pop rap out there is nihilistic IMO. I liked the days when I heard rap and it was about some dude's experiences and thoughts, not some dork saying whatever comes into his head to hyping himself up.

What makes the gangster fad different is it encourages things like i mentioned above; violence, objectifying women, et. The other trends don't do that. Emo's maybe glorify cutting - but not not near as many people fall into that trend. The "gangster" trend has become commonplace in poorer regions of the US - it's just the way things are. It is by far the most destructive trend. Stoner isn't a trend, its a byproduct of excessive marijuana use, and isn't destructive at all.

So... you are saying that you dislike how rap has evolved? How do you feel it has changed exactly in terms of the music iteself and the style? Do you think that its rise in popularity and the such overhyped it to the point where there was no more good music or...? (sorry for the barrage of questions, just really curious :P)

You find songs that talk about social problems, unnecessary, pointless, and stupid? Not all of them are like this, but a good chunk of real rap touches on social issues.

Also, some are pure poetry, like "You Never Know" by Immortal Technique.

I can't stand the subculture behind it. Drugs, violence, gangs, "bling", sagging pants, overall trying to be "gangsta". It's just stupid and promotes terrible things. Gangs are a horrible part of urban society and they just promote drugs, weapons trafficking, violence, etc. with their behavior.

However, I will acknowledge that there is a difference between "gangsta" culture and rap. As for the music, I just hate it for the music, regardless of the lyrics. The electronic beats and chanting (not even singing) and stuff just isn't for me. I don't see how it got so popular, but to each his own I suppose. I do think it goes into the realm of being bad when it has those
"gangsta" lyrics about disrespecting police and women, glorifying gangs, etc.

And to answer your question, I don't think emo, goth, stoners etc. is as bad because it doesn't glorify gangs and violence and such, but I do think that cosmetically, that stuff is ugly and the drugs and such they're associated with are bad things. However, there's not as much (if any) violence associated with them whereas guns and violence are very often associated with "gangstas". I dunno, I guess I don't have a huge problem with them, I just think their subculture is a bit weird and they need to get off the drugs (if they're on them, you can't assume all of them are on drugs).

Seeing as your first post said you liked rap, I'd like to know what sets rap apart in your eyes. I know rap culture is being greatly shaped by specific figures now (50 Cent, Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy, etc.), but doesn't that make rap like rock in the sense that it has various subgenres and it is plausable to like one type, but not the other because they sound so much different? And yet everyone who likes rap is amalgamated into the same social group as "gangsters".... : / It baffles me sometimes when people say they dislike rap, but then it is so diverse it could potentially be treated the same as rock (ie. "i like death metal, but not heavy metal").

You have to keep in mind that the gangsta ish is one part of Hip-Hop culture. ;) If anything it's the media (nowadays) perpetuating these images of hoes, guns, drugs, etc. There's not enough balance in Rap music anymore.

And I'm not a fan of subgenres, although I see why people would use it. I'm really open-minded to any type of Rap music really.

The modern media has given rap a bad name I guess... There are a lot of good rappers out there that have meaningful messages in their work, but sadly they are outshined (popularity wise, in most cases) by those that utilize offensive lyrics, sex appeal, and mesmerizing images.

I see mainstream Rap Culture as a way to disgrace Hip Hop which Rap in general is a part of thus IMO with todays mainstream picture of itself giving it a bad reputation. There are good Hip Hop out there, Mainstream Rap is not it. Its very rare now a days to see a good lyrical MC making it big in the mainstream scene simply because he/she won't sell unless the person often raps about money, hoes, guns and so on. But I support the Hip Hop culture in all, just not the mainstream scene with all their wanna-be-thugs and such.

I hate it. For the most part it teaches kids to be very sketchy, and strive for things that are increibly unreasonable...aka rappers renting cars, renting the ugly broads in which they use in their videos, renting out mansions when they only live in the ghetto in a half falling down house....but hey, its cool, lets fake it for the kids!

Rule #1: If a band mentions their own name or the name of one of their own members in their songs with the purpose of pointing out how awesome they think they are, that band sucks. I'm sure there is an exception or two out there, but it's just a general rule of thumb.* ;)

*Live performances don't count.

I think rap is a unique type of music, no kind like it

But, people should dress/act more mature, it gives bad influence to younger kids (ex: pants low, showing underwear)

Or let me put it this way: I despise blatant self-adoration in general, and rap seems to have quite a saturation of it.

Either way, I don't like the music with the exception of a few old songs like the famous Rapper's Delight. Even that I don't make any deliberate effort to listen to, but I'd actually rather listen to that than quite a bit of the rock songs on the radio.

Hip hop, bboying is good and there are good songs. But rap like 50 cent and souljia boy are just horrible. The style is okay if the pants aren't too low and the shirts aren't overly baggy.

I enjoy alot of old school rap music (Above the law, scarface, rundmc, Mac Dre, 2Pac, Digital Underground, Tribe Called Quest, KRSONE,NWA, Messy Marv etc..) but i kinda laugh at how so many people try to act gangster at times :P

Also all the younger kids these days are growing up with some terrible hiphop music like 50 cent and soulja boy, not all the music is like that

violence is sad and childish, rapping about ho's is disrespectful and bragging about your money, jewelry and cars is shallow. What else do you want to know?
