What do you think would happen here on ground level if the earths poles reversed?
BTW this is in relation to the earth aligning with the Supermassive Black Hole in the center of the milky way on 2012.

Like whats going to happen in 2012. Ya basically all technology will fail, any electronic device will be screwed and humanity would be put back into the stone age. KittenNipples
So basically a mass extinction level event.
I kinda hope so. Humans have it in them to be a good animal, but someone needs to hit the reset button. I really don't want everything to die.
I doubt that the earth would fly out of orbit. The earth has taken many knocks in the past, including one which created all the continents from a single Pangaea.

Just when you thought it was safe to exist in 2012...Read the whole page, nothing about 2012 or Earth aligning with our black hole.

I never said it did. I am just explaining what a SMBH is.

Ah...well, in your original post, you said it was.The earth would slowly spin off of its orbit and probably end up being roasted for a few months before being shot off into some weird elipitcal orbit.lim_akSweet!
life would pretty much end as all the ecosystems would be so screwed up killing off most animals and vegetation. Pearl_of_EgyptDepends on how fast the reversion happens.:|
Ugh this is silly. The poles have reversed many times throughout the history of Earth and the planet is still here.Darthmatt
Yeah seriously. It's not like they are going to happen in one day. It lake thousands of years for the poles to reverse.
I heard in physics last year, that if the poles were to reverse, there would be a time where the earth would have no magnetic field around it, this would cause all the solar radiation (And other radiation) that is usually deflected/repelled by the magnetic field to fall on the earth, effectively causing all life on earth to receive massive doses of radiation, causing cancer, mutation and even death... But that's just what I heard last year at some point ^_^ don't know how true it is or not..._0V3RKI11_Like previously stated, our poles have shifted many times in Earth's history and it take thousands of years to do so. Also we are protected from solar radiation by our atmosphere (I know I simplified this a bit) which is held by gravity.

Yeah, but would that be main protection from gamma waves, whereas the magnetic field would protect more from Alpha particles and less so, beta particles?
