What motivates you to do a good job? At school? At work? In a relationship?

Is it because you have a strong work ethic? Because you want to advance beyond where you are? Is it to shame those around you by comparison?

For my part most of the time I have a good work ethic and I'd do a good job no matter what. But sometimes darkness creeps into my heart and the real motivating factor behind me doing something well is to make someone else look bad.

For example, sometimes I will do a lot more around my house and really work and make specific sacrifices in my marriage so that my brother, in comparison, looks like a lazy ass. Isn't that horrible?

Every morning I look at the Forbes 500. If my name isn't on it, I get to work.

I want to prove to others; and myself, that I can.

Too much of my life was spent being the pincushion, the frail victim, I'm trying to get away from that impression people have of me.

I just like the feeling of doing a good job... if I'm going to do work, I might as well do it well.

Money, good marks, proving others wrong (possibly the biggest reason), proving it to myself.

RamboSymbiot

Any kind of job. When I made the thread, I was specifically thinking about things I do in my marriage that I might not normally do. I do them because I know my brother would never do that, and I want to be better than him. I want people to look at his situation, and at my situation and say "Y'know, this guy has really got it together, and his brother is just a piece of crap".

I don't hate my brother, but I know I'm a better person than he is and want other people to see that in our actions.

The sense of satisfaction that I've done what I set out to do, and I've done it to the best of my ability. If you're going to do something, you may as well do it properly.
