First of all I know there will be a few post from tough guys that say I'm too old to be scared or to mentally stable for such nonsense etc. But in the way of entertainment and such what are some of the more disturbing elements of a movie that take you out of your confort zone a little? This discussion came about with me when my cousin came over this weekend and we watched Skeleton Key, very good movie IMO. So here are my picks of the top "Scariest" movies I've seen. In no particular order.

The Blair Witch Project:
Many people say this movie wasn't scary at all or say that it was dumb etc. However there were alot of elements that made this movie a little nerve racking. 1. It was done as a documentary with no music to set a tone or mood. 2. They never showed you a monster it was left to your imagination as to what the Blair Witch really looked like. 3. The ending was great and the more I thought about what was happening and the tales from the towns people the scarier it was.

Skeleton Key:
Voodoo/Hoodoo is scary, period. New Orleans and some of it's history is scary. So to have two former slaves who become ghost taking other peoples bodies in some demonic ritual messed with me. ALOT.

Serpent and the Rainbow: Voodoo nuff said...

The Exorcist: This was just a freeky little movie for it's time and the subsequent movies that followed got even more over the top.

Poltergeist: To this day I don't think I've watched one of those movies all the way through.

Cujo: Just a very well done movie by Stephen King.

The Ring: Decent thrill with the girl with the long hair coming out of the T.V.

I'm sure there are a ton more but this is off the top of my head.

To be honest...I don't get scared at movies. I don't really ever jump due to a 'boo!' moment...and movies never stay with me after I leave the theater or turn off the DVD player. Watching scary movies on broadcast television is even worse with all the commercials.

I really wish I could be scared or just creeped out. The closest a movie has ever been to doing that is Event Horizon.

I think the scariest movie I've ever seen was Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 and 1973 version), and the unique thing about it is the fact there is no blood or violence in it. Sounds too good to be true? Watch it! ;)

alot of people dont know fear because they live in a bubble and have never really experienced suffering or horror. the people who have though, can understand and relate.

I'm scared of the freaky ones, like the Exorcist, The Ring, Grudge...that kind of stuff. I don't only scare them, I start to feel awful after watching them. Bad stuff.

What comes to massacres, lots of blood, ripping of body parts...they just make me feel sick. Not afraid. Sick.

Horror films tend not to be scary in the slightest...

However, if you take the darker works of David Lynch, I always get a very uneasy feeling watching them.

Horror films don't get to me, I love the genre. It is films like Takashi Miike's "Audition" that unsettle me.

I have a real thing about Body Horror like Shivers (good film) and Viral/Epidemic films like well any Zombie movie this side of 1968.

The Thing is a good combination of both those factors and has a great ending.

This may sound pathetic but The Strangers did freak me out. I watched it in the cinema which does add an element of scaryness to it i think. It was just the masks that freaked me out more than anything.

Like the Saw movies only scare me because of Jigsaw's clown thing. I'm terrified of them!

Oh God Oh God Oh God!!!

But seriously, anything rooted in religious principles eg. The Exorcist, as it feels more real having been raised in a religious home.

I can handle monsters and ghosts and whatnot. It's that look where they are completely serious and perfectly still yet they have intensely wide-eyes. That gets me. :|

I agree with that, because the whole religious aspect seems taboo in some ways.

I seriously laugh at any horror movie that tries to scare you with 'boo' scenes, blood and gore[too much].

I'll third that one. With my religious beliefs, it's terrifying. Monsters and viruses I can handle. Zombies, I actually enjoy. When it comes to demons, I lose sleep.

Weird huh?

Anything with non-human type things. Tentacles and such. Gore I can handle no problem. Psychologically disturbing things I love. But movies like Alien freak me out. Apart from that, I'm really fine. Watching 28 Weeks Later right now, about 30 minutes every few days, loving it so far but it's not scary.

/playing Dead Space, scared **** every time I turn a corner. Those things are GROSS

bollywood horror movies really get me, because its scary to think that the people who made the film thought it was good enough to release into the cinemas.

There was this one vampire movie I can't remember what it was called but it went back to how vampires were started and it had something to do with Judas betraying Jesus and it had a lot of flash backs of some biblical stuff. That shook me, like I said Taboo. Although not really scary the Devils Advocate tripped me out in that same way.

Wow, I was kind of waiting for him the be struck by lighting or something even though he was acting. lol

Hollywood seems to be obsessed with OTT gore (SAW anyone?) I I like British horror movies though, 28days later was very good.

I thought Saw was pretty interesting the first couple times. As for 28 Days Later, the sprinting zombies were a brilliant idea.

The Shining - pretty good horror movie
