What type of wilderness (as in not in a city or populated area, but the wild) is the easiest for the average human to be able to live off of the elements and thrive in?

Settled wilderness. But I say forests, because you can chop them down and turn them into grasslands in civ 4.

Probably western asia, what is known as the fertile crescent. That area saw the rise of the earliest human civilizations and the cultures that came from there basically managed to conquer the entire world because the conditions there allowed them to do that. Not other area in the world shared all the necessary conditions for such a successful development.

If Civ IV has taught me anything, it's that temperate locations are the best.

I'd say coastal california, specifically up north. Forest near by, plenty of naturally occuring foodstuffs to gather, good soil to cultivate crops eventually, and lots of fish and stuff nearby. Oh and lots of game; turkeys, deer, etc.

I imagine those Indians way back in the day had some pretty good living
