What version of Photoshop to get?

I need to get some good photo editing software, but last I saw, the newest version of Photoshop is something like $600. But I also notice that there's something called Photoshop Elements, that is a lot less expensive. If I just want to do the normal photo editing stuff, what version of Photoshop is best for me?

Get the student edition, it's like 1/5 the price. In all fairness if you just want it for what you describes, elements should be fine. Most people don't even use half the features in the newer versions of photoshop, it's a professional software for a reason.
