I've spent the past couple of weeks looking on Craigslist and local dealers trying to find my first car. I wanted to get an idea of what other people got for their first cars. Any advice would be greatly appriciated as well.

An '01 Mustang. It was dog slow and I spent way too much trying to make it fast but for a first car, it was cool. As for what I'd suggest...either a used truck for cheap or a higher mileage Toyota four-door that you can just drive the wheels off of.

Well this all certainly depends on your budget... But my first car is also my current car; I have a 2002 Ford Taurus SEL. I really like it. It has black leather, metallic dark gray body color, automatic climate control, 6-CD changer (though this isn't all that needed), gets ~ 27 MPG. For me, it's awesome. Sure, there are other cars I'd like to get (ie, a hybrid), but this car certainly works well for me.

This was my first one (not mine, but similar except for a lack of gold trim):

Lost that one to a Coke truck that rear-ended me. Eventually I ended up replacing it with this one:

Not a bad upgrade in my opinion.

A 1-litre Nissan Micra from the 80s. It struggled going up even the slighest gradients, however downhill I could push it to just above 100mph. What a beast.... Anyway I have no advice as I really know sweet f*** all about cars.

Never owned one, but I drove a 1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88 in high school, and a 1991 Buick Park Avenue a few years ago. If I had the money to get one now, it would either be a Civic or Focus. I want something small and efficient, but also a little sporty. If I had some really good money, I'd go for a Honda NSX or Porsche 911.

'02 Mazda Protege. It was a great car, good one to tune up. It was good and cheap on gas too. I sometimes wish I still had it.

1996 Mitsubishi Lancer GSR. I got it in 2004. Probably one of the best buys I've ever made, never really had any problems with it.

I will probably sell it next year though, just for a change. Be sad to see it go.

My first was a mid eighties grand prix. The only advice that I have is do not spend a lot or get a nice car as your first. Get some driving experience with something that can get dinged up, scratched and dented without you getting too upset, plus the added degree of care and maintenance gets you into good habits. I know it sucks driving around in an early model car but you have your whole life to ride in the bmw's and such. It's a good learning experience, character builder and plus the stories you get from having a car like that you'll remember forever

4 cylinder, get a 4 cylinder for your first car. Cheap on gas, if you're a male then I recommend just going ahead with a V8 :P
