I develop websites and want to create something the gaming community can get into - so what kind of website do you think has true potential to be extremely popular and used by you constantly? Any ideas? A strategy wiki, a cheat code wiki, anything else? If not games what appeals to you? Let me know, I'm looking for ideas (and people to beta test!).

Personally i like the idea of a site where everygame is seen as an equal no matter the budget or devlopment location. I dislike the fact that most western sites only cover western games ignoring the huge amount of developers in Russia, China, Korea and most of Japan they also ignore the Taipei game show (300,000 visiters), Paris game show (75000 visiters), G-Star (82,000), Cebit, Computex which are bigger than Pax, CES, E3 ect.

So you want a site with infinite resources and employees to cover every game that comes out and every major and minor trade show around the world?

It already happens it's just not in the same languages, go take a look at the korean and chinese gamespot sites. The easy way to cover the shows is having an asian, european and american office to cover the shows in their locality, peering between sites would also manage this much faster all you'ld need is a uniform API and you could link it all together into one large global site. You could also allow the users to create pages similar to giantbomb so that staff do not have to create content, they just keep the site maintained whilst the users amalgamate it.

The users only fill in the database on GB. You'd still need an enormous editorial staff if you were going to cover all of that stuff sufficiently, and not every site can afford that because it's not really worth it to them. It's not that they're sitting around saying "These Chinese games are garbage! Western games are superior!" They're sitting around saying "How much of our audience knows or cares about these games/shows? Is it worth it to cover them, and can we maintain a certain level of quality in our coverage when we spread ourselves out like that?"

That's kinda what BitMob does, isn't it? They have an editorial staff, but a lot of their content is community-generated.

Exaclty, it could be improved by making it a full structured wiki. I like the idea of having no content generated by staff or atleast not labled as staff.

I already know of a smaller site like that - but since I'm a staff writer, I don't want to be seen as advertising the site.

a game wiki that's user upheld, similar to last.fm, so all games in existance will end up on the site with a rating system that spans globally. This way the rating and the 'similar games' are as accurate as possible. I'd jump ship to that site if it existed.

Well, make sure they have rules like no posting pr0n anything else inappropriate, but there is no need to go too much further than that. And then let people just have at it in flame wars. If possible let them come up with silly terms like there are in the SW forum (sheep, cows, lemmings, etc)

So let's see what we have here so far... A combination game wiki/forum/community blog? Key points: - Loose rules, but some rules in forum - Each game has one page with multiple section, not a page for each game on each platform What else we got?

What's your budget? Because without a really good budget this site ain't going anywhere. Even covering just the mainstream games (though obviously as a wiki it would need to cover all games to become even vaguely popular) you're talking terabytes of data. It's not something you can do on your own unless you happen to share a flat with a bunch of web developers and have a spare datacentre lying about.

I am a web designer/developer. Don't worry about bandwidth - just let me know your dream site. With bandwidth comes traffic, with traffic comes enough revenue to keep the site up. Personally, I want to run just enough ads to cover traffic, labor of love.
