What's everyone's favorite poem? If yours is short, paste it here. If not, just link us to it. You can list why if you want, but you don't have to.

Mine is "A Man Said to the Universe"

A man said to the universe:
"Sir I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation."

One of the reasons why I love it so much is that it is short, sweet, and to the point.

"The Second Coming" by William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in the sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

"Dust of Snow" by Robert Frost

The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree

Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.

They're both really awesome.

An American Prayer, by Jim Morrison. Umm...can't post it here without getting modded. Here's my favorite part, though:

"The movie will begin in 5 moments"
The mindless Voice announced
"All those unseated, will await
The next show"

We filed slowly, languidly
into the hall. The auditorium
was vast, & silent.
As we seated & were darkened
The Voice continued:

"The program for this evening
is not new. You have seen
This entertainment thru & thru.
You've seen your birth, your
life & death; you might recall
all of the rest -- (did you
have a good world when you
died?) -- enough to base
a movie on?"

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I LOVE Dickinson. Succinct, sweet and lonely like an echo down an empty hall.

Here are a few:

HOPE IS A THING WITH FEATHERS

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I FELT A FUNERAL FOR MY BRAIN

I felt a funeral in my brain,
And mourners, to and fro,
Kept treading, treading, till it seemed
That sense was breaking through.

And when they all were seated,
A service like a drum
Kept beating, beating, till I thought
My mind was going numb.

And then I heard them lift a box,
And creak across my soul
With those same boots of lead, again.
Then space began to toll

As all the heavens were a bell,
And Being but an ear,
And I and silence some strange race,
Wrecked, solitary, here.

I HEARD A FLY BUZZ WHEN I DIED

I felt a funeral in my brain,
And mourners, to and fro,
Kept treading, treading, till it seemed
That sense was breaking through.

And when they all were seated,
A service like a drum
Kept beating, beating, till I thought
My mind was going numb.

And then I heard them lift a box,
And creak across my soul
With those same boots of lead, again.
Then space began to toll

As all the heavens were a bell,
And Being but an ear,
And I and silence some strange race,
Wrecked, solitary, here.

I also loved Ginsberg's Howl, which I also cannot post much of:

to recreate the syntax and measure of poor human prose and stand before you speechless and intelligent and shaking with shame, rejected yet confessing out the soul to conform to the rhythm of thought in his naked and endless head, the madman bum and angel beat in Time, unknown, yet putting down here what might be left to say in time come after death, and rose reincarnate in the ghostly clothes of jazz in the goldhorn shadow of the band and blew the suffering of America's naked mind for love into an eli eli lamma lamma sabacthani saxophone cry that shivered the cities down to the last radiowith the absolute heart of the poem of life butchered out of their own bodies good to eat a thousand years.

Probably some poem by Kavafis.

But I havent read many poems and I onle read poems by Kavafis because it was part of the Greek Literature lesson for the last year of High School.

I had fun analysing them and it was great that one of his poems was the one selected for the Panhellenic exams.

Here's my attempt to translate a poem by Kavafis into English.

The poem is called "Melancholy" in the English Translation I made, but the actual title is much bigger in length. (I cant recall it 100% but its somewhat like "The Melancholy of (enter name, date and place here)")

So here it goes....

_________________________________

Melancholy
The passing of years through my body and shape
Wound from a horrible knife it is.
There are no means for me to escape
To you, Art of Poetry, I resort,
You somewhat know of remedies;
To mellow the ache trying, through Fantasy and Words

Wound from a horrible knife it is
Bring your remedies, Art of Poetry
That render the wound – for a while – sufferable

______________________________

As you see its not a rhyming poem, nor does it have a metre (the shape - escape rhyme happened coincidentally in translation. There are no rhymes in the original poem).

And a translation couldnt do justice to a poem imo. Poems are the hardest to translate. Not because you cant translate them per se but because its nearly impossible to convey the same underlying messages, hints and feelings of the tongue it was initially written into the language you want to translate it. The grammatical structure of each language gives it unique tools to be expressive and although no language lacks in those expressive means (at least not in a degree to create a serious problem in most cases), their "actualisation" matters a lot and thats what differs mostly. I just felt like doing it though.

Desiderata, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Raven, or that other poem, I cannot remember what it's called but it was about the guy who murdered someone, hid the body under the floorboards, and when he was talking to cops he kept thinking he heard the heart beating.

That sounds like "The Tell Tale Heart" but I remember that being a short story, not a poem.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner, yeah! I love Iron Maiden! :P

It wasn't made by Iron Maiden, Iron Maiden took lines from the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and made it into one of the greatest epic's in music ever!

But I agree, the song is probably my second favorite, right behind Hallowed be thy Name.

Now that I think of it, because song lyrics are basically poems, Hallowed be thy Name would be on there too.

I'm not a big poem guy, but I really like Rendezvous by Alan Seeger

I have a rendezvous with Death
At some disputed barricade,
I have a rendezvous with Death
At some disputed barricade,
When Spring comes back with rustling shade
And apple-blossoms fill the air--
I have a rendezvous with Death
When Spring brings back blue days and fair.

It may be he shall take my hand
And lead me into his dark land
And close my eyes and quench my breath--
It may be I shall pass him still.
I have a rendezvous with Death
On some scarred slope of battered hill,
When Spring comes round again this year
And the first meadow-flowers appear.

God knows 'twere better to be deep
Pillowed in silk and scented down,
Where love throbs out in blissful sleep,
Pulse nigh to pulse, and breath to breath,
Where hushed awakenings are dear . . .
But I've a rendezvous with Death
At midnight in some flaming town,
When Spring trips north again this year,
And I to my pledged word am true,
I shall not fail that rendezvous.

this is a famous good poem "O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; Rise up--for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills, For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding, For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head! It is some dream that on the deck, You've fallen cold and dead. My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still; My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will; The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done; From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won; Exult O shores, and ring O bells! But I, with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead."
