How can this film be so incredible if it is foreign language? Now, i'm not dissing it at all - I've never seen it - and it looks great. But isn't a lot of the drama lost if you're just reading subtitles? I've seen good subtitled films, but I never enjoy them as much as good English films. SO what about this film is so great? It's not dubbed or something, is it?

I guess its a skill to be able to read subtitles and still be absorbed with the movie? I dont know. The drama/acting is just as great since I don't focus 110% into reading the subtitles.

The story, the characters, it's just overall well done. You don't even notice you're reading subtitles after a while.

this is the correct answer

and TS, i take it you've never watched a single subtitled film? if not i feel bad for ya, there are a LOT of awesome flicks that are subtitled. and i'd call Pans Labyrith more of a kinda dark fairy tale. i enjoyed the movie, i watched it quite a few times and its weird every time.

The subtitles eventually just fade away and you read the words and associate it to what they're saying automatically without really thinking. :P At least, that's how it works with me. The movie is visually stunning, and is flat-out incredibly well made...character development, plot progression, etc.

There are many great films made in other languages besides English. It's good to get out there and see what's available. Otherwise, you're really missing out. Pan's Labyrinth tells a great, sad story.

even if you arent a spanish speaker, youll be able to pick up the inflection in the characters voices and various mannerisms that go beyond simply reading lines. plus the score is excellent and will easily draw you into the feelings of the main character and the dreamlike fantasy atmosphere around her. just go watch it.

What does the language of the film have anything to do with how good of a film it is? Nothing.

Disliking a movie because of subtitles is really stupid, I'm sorry. People can hate on Pan's Labyrinth all they want (Although it was a fantastic film) but if anybody lists that it is foreign language as a fault of the film I auto /facepalm

To the TC: Have you ever been really been absorbed in a book? When you're really into a book you don't even realize you're reading words because you're focussed on the imagery in your head. Watching Pan's Labyrinth is essentially the same thing except the imagery is playing out in front of you. Though I had to read subtitles I was completely absorbed in the movie and it wouldn't have been the same had it been dubbed over. Just give it a chance and I'm sure you'll see for yourself.

You don't even need words for the Pale Man.

BTW, you're going to need a new pair of pants after watching that.

Christ, you can have drama in a film without people saying anything. Be brave and watch something with subtitles for once. If not then this might be just the film for you!!!

Its an amazing film.... I watch anime and do not speak full japanese (yet) :) so I need to read occasionally, but when I first started watching I didnt know any. But once you pick up the skill of reading and focusing on the rest of whats going on, it doesnt make a difference. If you havn't watched it then please do... and I would hope they don't dub it, dubs ruin whatever gets dubbed.

It's an awesome movie, its beautiful, it has a great story, its scary at one point and I don't really care about subtitles. Its still a good movie, and dubs can ruin a movie.

Mr_Versipellis

if you cannot enjoy a subtitled film, that is your fault, not the film's. Learn to read faster, I guess.

to answer your question, Pan's Labyrinth is good for a variety of reasons:

1. Excellent acting

2. A complex plot with excellent writing.

3. It is a visual feast, and not heavily reliant on CGI

4. Historical spin; it takes place in fascist Spain, and the complex plot runs parallel to the guerillas and the Spanish commander and the little girl...its just great.

5. Multiple genres...semi-historical, fantasy, suspense, a little bit of horror even.

The only time I've ever had subtitles get in teh way of a movie was when I tried to watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon on IFC. The text was yellow with no border and blended into the background. Had to pause it several times just to read it correctly until I gave up.

Why would you ask what makes it great if you haven't even watched it? you are asking for a big fat spoiler . Subtitles have never bothered me in a film personally, I prefer them to dubbing anyway.
