Vast popularity. I personally am not a fan, but if a band is popular, then they can be generally defined as "great".

Van Halen's an incredible guitarist but I'm not into that style of music. Too little substance. David Lee Roth is super annoying too.

OK ENOUGH OF THIS BLASHEMY! Clearly you people have either never even heard Van Halen or have never even played an instrument in your lives. In 1978 Eddie Van Halen shocked the world with super fast Virtuoso performance when their first LP came out. He did things on a electric guitar which many people thought was done on an organ. Until they realised that it was done on guitar. To say he is above average guitarist is saying Steve Vai sucks and he cant play jack sh*&t. One can say with certainty that he mainstreamed the hammer on/pull technique or might have been the pioneer in it. AND please dont try and compare Jimmy Hendrix to Eddie, they had way differnt styles and techniques. Eddie is not popular because he's like Britny Spears, its cause he revolutionized the rock/guitar industry. So please people to do some homework before talkin trash about something you know nothing about! Van Halen is for the musician listener, like Kings X, Yes, Dream Theater, Rush etc. They dont make music to be commercial they do it cause its in their blood and soul. That is why alot of you guys will never ever understand Jazz

Eddie Van Halen is an above average guitaristNisstyre_56

Yeah that is why he is considered one of the best in the world. Not only can the man play with imense speed and accuracy he plays with passion which is what the majority of guitarist's these days lack..the likes of Steve Vai, Satriani. I think they are good but they are all technical and respect to them for their skill but i would not listen to them. Eddie Van Halen also made the finger-tapping technique popular. I think that you are very wrong.

I listen to music and appreciate every level of it. I've also played guitar for 13 years or so. I recognize Van Halen as a great guitarist but this post is about the band. As far as Van Halen's(the band) music, it's dry and hardly has any substance. To me you can be an incredible instrumentalist but if you write dry, dull music then it's pointless. I love music deeply..mainstream..underground..whatever and to me Van Halen's music is boring and doesn't have depth. I like music that's about songwriting..not showing off how technically skilled you are. I prefer bands that are about the song (Smashing Pumpkins,Floyd) than music that's about showing off(VH,Malmsteen...). Sometimes bands have both qualities(Pantera,Opeth,Hendrix). Just because many people don't like Van Halen doesn't mean they're any less musically credible than you.

Van Halen is great -you have to judge them from when they played; their good stuff was in the 80's. No, their sound is different from what's out today, as it's not as modern, but that's okay. Their music also changed over the years, and they have a lot of great material that wasn't always on the radio. OU812 and Diver Down are good Van Halen albums, and there are many more.

Let's see how many bands today sell as many albums as Van Halen and are still being talked about twenty years later.

They had a couple good songs, but I wouldn't pay money for their records or shows.  And there are zillions better solos than eruption, anyways.

Van Halen  -from Wikpedia. They had more than "a couple good songs"

From 1978 to 1998 the band released 11 studio albums (all of which broke the Top 20 spot of the Billboard 200 music charts. The band has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide and has received several Grammy nominations. Van Halen is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records with the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock List. According to the Recording Industry Association of America Van Halen is #19 on the list of Top Selling Artists of all time (having sold more than 56 million albums in the U.S.). Van Halen is one of five rock groups that have had two albums (not including Greatest Hits albums) (the self titled debut and 1984) sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. (the others being: Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Def Leppard).

I wasn't talking about what the public thinks, I was talking about what I think.  And I think they had a couple good songs, even if they broke 40 sales records or not.  I hold pretty much the same opinion as Nissyre 66.

To answer the post, what's so great about Van Halen?   Selling 75 million albums worldwide, and having the most billboard #1 mainstream rock hits is a good start. They have their own sound, and while some like them and some don't, they have a lot more than "a couple good songs" to sell 75 million albums -that's just being fair and objective.

You got a point there with Britney, I'd have to admit. Perhaps she's "great" at making money, or cutting her hair short, but she's not a "great" band, true.

Yes, I'm a Van Halen fan. But still, while there may be exceptions, popular-longevity correlates more to being a good band, than not. It takes some popularity, perhaps unfortunately, to get backing for successive albums from a record company in the first place. People have their music tastes, and there are one-hit-wonder flukes, but to sell album after album for three decades (like Van Halen has) is no fluke; there's good music there. While some of my favorite bands are not popular, more great bands are popular than not.

I was never into Van Halen.

Certainly, Eddie Van Halen is a talented guitarist, just not the kind of talent that I enjoy listening to.
