I really don't understand why do people consider travelling so important. Sometimes I think people only travel to brag about it

I do understand travelling can be enjoyed but what I mean is that people seem to think they learn a lot from travelling and I think they could learn much more in other ways

Because people enjoy it? I don't see what's not to enjoy about it.

It broadens your horizons, delimits narrow-minded attitudes, and generally improves your outlook on life and overall well being. What more could you ask for?

There's nothing important about it. It's just something some people want to do and enjoy doing.

You can experience stuff that maybe is not in your country. The authentic regional food, celebrations, sights, etc.

it enhances your view of the world.

travelling is very important; how people can go their entire lives without seeing the ocean is beyond me.

you dont even have to go too far, just explore your neighboring state and/or country.

Because there are so many different landscapes and cultures to discover even within your own country and state. I think it is important to at least get a taste of different peoples and cultures. Not to mention it's always good to get away from the norms of everyday life. Also travel could involve visiting family which is obviously important. And some people seek adventure which traveling can provide.

It's great to see other cultures and new sights. I don't care how HD a TV is; there's nothing quite like seeing something firsthand.

I wouldn't say it's important, but it's nice. If you're referring to the people who snub their noses at others because they've never traveled Europe, just forget about them. Spending a week in a different country doesn't make them as enlightened as they like to pretend.

I'm going to put this in terms you can understand. Life is like a gigantic game of Age of Empires. With exploration, you receive a points bonus for % of map discovered, as well as resource bonuses, which I'm just going to loosely refer to in this analogy as CULTURE.

Pfft, traveling has got nothing to do with bragging. You really think I tell people about how i've climbed sand dunes in the SAHARA DESERT, or scaled GLACIERS IN ICELAND, just to make them jealous? :P

But seriously, traveling is for the experience. You don't want to live your whole life without seeing more than just your hometown, do you?

I think that is pretty valid but it wouldn't be necessary to travel more than once

Also I do understand travelling can be enjoyed but what I mean is that people seem to think they learn a lot from travelling and I think they could learn much more in other ways

How can you say that? There's so much of the world that hardly anybody will even see 1/2 of all the cultures firsthand! A lifetime of traveling wouldn't be enough! I've been to South Africa. I witnessed first hand the racial tension between the blacks and whites, the poverty in the Zulu villages, but still, the humanity and love via dance that could transcend racial barriers. SA culture isn't just the vuvuzela ... And post-apartheid SA isn't fine and dandy like your history textbooks might lead you to believe. I haven't visited any other countries, but cultures are not all the same... I want to visit every country. How could traveling once be enough?

this

i try not to stereotype, but I am only human

I was also lucky enough that, as a youth, I flew for free. So my family and I were able to travel, and I was consistently proven wrong.

The French are polite and courteous
The Germans are warm, kind people
There is a lot more to Japan than Tokyo and cute women
English food is not revolting
A Vietnamese man who lost his leg to an American landmine will buy you a drink if you talk to him

*oops did I brag? My bad...

I learned that just by watching the world cup.

And just to prove my point of how people like to brag about travelling, one day I was telling someone some people were willing to give their lifes to go to Mars since there isn't enough techonology to return alive to Earth, I said that I would probably do it, especially if I was older and he said "I would never do it, unless I could return to Earth and tell everyone. Look I went to Mars"

Books, programs, web pages, etc. And yes you could say it's not the same but wouldn't it be more important to learn about a few other things like the universes's history or the earth's history or even about your own culture?

I do think travelling once, for a long period of time outside your native country could be important

I can certainly agree on that, but some sources can be biased. That's just me.

And about the universe and the earth's history, not a lot of people aside from historians, scientists or people with a deep interest in such a field will give a rat's ass about it. Even our greatest minds alive so little about the universe regardless.

Book, programs and the internet cannot give you the same experience as actually being there. Books can tell you one thing but without the actual experience it's just words. You have an idea of what it's like but you cannot fully understand or appreciate it unless you engage all your senses by actually being a part of what you are trying to learn.

What's "more important" is entirely subjective. Besides, why not just do both? It's not like if you go on a one week vacation you'll go blind and be unable to read a book ever again.

Traveling to a place is much more better experience than simply learning about it from word of mouth/textbooks. At least to me.

Why would someone give a rat's ass about *insert culture name* culture if they don't give a rat's ass about the universe or earth? I mean unless they had relatives from that place I don't see how could someone be interested in another culture and not be interested in the earth or the universe

Because people priorities aren't programed to have a specific order, people may find interesting things that have no relation or an evident relation.

They're interested in that culture. That's why. I've never seen anyone in my life who's interested in the universe. They can't go there, so why bother? But you can travel to other countries.

You can travel to Europe and Asia and experience the culture there but we can't travel to the asteroid belt to learn the universe's history now, can we.

All the different types of women LOL WUT.

Or, the reason I'd love to go traveling, to see the beauty of Nature where humans haven't built anything. Climb a mountain, hike through a forest, get attacked by a lion and dragged off screaming. You know, stuff like that.

I kind of agree with you TC. While I think it can be beneficial for someone to actually live in another country and experience life there, I think it's pointless to go there as a tourist and do nothing but see a bunch of landmarks for a week.

Some people want to see and experience the world first hand.

This. It also helps you learn about how other cultures live, and it's a lot of fun visiting different countries.

I really don't understand why do people consider travelling so important. Sometimes I think people only travel to brag about it

I do understand travelling can be enjoyed but what I mean is that people seem to think they learn a lot from travelling and I think they could learn much more in other ways

Can someone describe the color yellow to a blind person? That's why some people need to go to the actual place and see it themselves in order to get the full experience. Also, travel, depending on where one goes, can be relaxing, fun, sociable, educational, etc.
