Basses are awesome. Lower = better
I'm more inclined towards the double bass, though. Especially in jazz.
I know it's important to the band, im in a band, but I don't understand what would make someone want to play the thing. it's hard to play live cause of the strings and you end up standing stil
Again, refer to my post. I love regular guitar, but playing bass offers a different experience that many find interesting.I know it's important to the band, im in a band, but I don't understand what would make someone want to play the thing. it's hard to play live cause of the strings and you end up standing stil

Have there ever been any bass guitarists that sing? It's very common to see lead singers also play lead guitar or rhythm, but i can't recall any bassist singers.FrostyPhantasmslayer's singer is also the bassist, also that cassandra in wayne's world was the bassist and singer of her band.
I ocassionaly play bass when I'm jamming. It fun because bass makes everything sound 10x times better.
Bass is more challenging than it looks. It's a lot heavier than your standard electric guitar, so fatigue becomes a factor when playing in a band setup. And, believe it or not, you can have a good jam with only drums and bass. Without bass, everything just sounds sort of meh.

Gene Simmons.
The lead singer of Slayer.
Marco Hietala of Nightwish.
It's not as common as having the lead guitarist sing, yeah, but it happens.
cause you can be like "slappin da baaaaass"

This, plus it's been scientifically proven that bassists have sex-tastic facial hair.

IF you ever seen them live the red hot chili peppers have an amazing bassist nicknamed flea, who is full of win.
Also the bassist for rush sings vocal too.

Double bass (upright) is awesome. I love playing bass. I play several instruments...bass and drums are my favorite. I love playing rhythm. In many band situations, the bass and drums are what hold the band together. There would be no Billy Jean without that beat. There would be no Chameleon without that beat. et cetera.

Doesn't green day's vocalist play bass? I think he does. Anyway, while being a bassist in many bands is nothing more than a second rate guitarists job, a truly talented bassist can shoot a bands talent into the stratosphere or even stand alone without a guitarist (see les claypool for one of the more famous)

I can't believe you all forgot Lemmy!!!
I don't play bass, but in many cases it makes the music. This may be horrifying to any GNR fans, but when Chinese Democracy came out I didn't notice Slash being gone, it was Duff. A great bass player can really enhance a band, like Flea with RHCP.btaylor2404
Flea is an amazing Bassist..I can't even imaging RHCP without Flea.
This as well. Many bands/songs just wouldn't sound right without bass. Queen, anyone?[QUOTE="cyberdarkkid"]A lot of music would sound incomplete without bass.LZ71

He just asked why someone would want to play the bass, as in what made them want to learn that particular instrument, not whether the bass is important or not.Doesn't sound like TC has much of a music background. Bass is essential. Some bands are only bass and drums (example: Death from Above 1979). It's a versatile instrument, and without it many bands would just lose their whole sound.
