Bassists I've talked to say they like the groovy sound to it, and also being the guy that provides the glue for the band. Also, if there is already a guitarist in the group :P.

I'm more inclined towards the double bass, though. Especially in jazz.

It provides a different sound and feel than playing a guitar.

This as well. Many bands/songs just wouldn't sound right without bass.

I know it's important to the band, im in a band, but I don't understand what would make someone want to play the thing. it's hard to play live cause of the strings and you end up standing stil

Again, refer to my post. I love regular guitar, but playing bass offers a different experience that many find interesting.

for otakus, probably because of her: I'm not sure for other people, but bass lines are pretty cool to listen to (at least for me, seinfeld theme is pretty badass) and in our school band, we only had bass and didn't have guitar, so the only "cool" instrument was bass

Have there ever been any bass guitarists that sing? It's very common to see lead singers also play lead guitar or rhythm, but i can't recall any bassist singers.

slayer's singer is also the bassist, also that cassandra in wayne's world was the bassist and singer of her band.

Listen to Iron Maiden or Suicidal Tendencies for the reason to play bass. Both Steve Harris and Rob Trujillo are amazing.

Bass is more challenging than it looks. It's a lot heavier than your standard electric guitar, so fatigue becomes a factor when playing in a band setup. And, believe it or not, you can have a good jam with only drums and bass. Without bass, everything just sounds sort of meh.

Gene Simmons.

The lead singer of Slayer.

Marco Hietala of Nightwish.

It's not as common as having the lead guitarist sing, yeah, but it happens.

There's quite a few in metal that I know of. The most notable is probably Immolation, but bands like Ulcerate, Septic Flesh, Revocation, Nocturnus, Deeds Of Flesh, and many other metal artists also have bassists as frontmen. Hell, I was frontman (I play bass) in my own band until we gave up due to time, distance, and inspiration issues. Maybe someday we'll try again...

It's a lot of fun to play when you fingerpick and get into a groove, which sometimes can be difficult depending on the track and tempo. As long as the bass track isn't treated like another guitar and is used to keep the rhythm, it's good. I do get really bored when it's overly simple though, which it can be for many pop-ish songs.

IF you ever seen them live the red hot chili peppers have an amazing bassist nicknamed flea, who is full of win.

Also the bassist for rush sings vocal too.

Double bass (upright) is awesome. I love playing bass. I play several instruments...bass and drums are my favorite. I love playing rhythm. In many band situations, the bass and drums are what hold the band together. There would be no Billy Jean without that beat. There would be no Chameleon without that beat. et cetera.

Doesn't green day's vocalist play bass? I think he does. Anyway, while being a bassist in many bands is nothing more than a second rate guitarists job, a truly talented bassist can shoot a bands talent into the stratosphere or even stand alone without a guitarist (see les claypool for one of the more famous)

I don't play bass, but in many cases it makes the music. This may be horrifying to any GNR fans, but when Chinese Democracy came out I didn't notice Slash being gone, it was Duff. A great bass player can really enhance a band, like Flea with RHCP.

Doesn't sound like TC has much of a music background. Bass is essential. Some bands are only bass and drums (example: Death from Above 1979). It's a versatile instrument, and without it many bands would just lose their whole sound.

Dunno, i like the groovy sound and the potential for speed and usage of effects a la cliff burton, i myself am a drummer and learning guitar, would love to learn bass sometime
