What do you mean "besides?" Apple doesn't even make the best PMPs.

Anyway..I'll throw out the Cowon D2+ as a recommendation for a great flash-based PMP around $150..much better than any iPod, imho.

-50 hours of battery life.

-Supports pretty much audio format..Vorbis, FLAC, even APE.

-Very high volume output.

-Unicode support.

-Removable SDHC card slot (this is *awesome* to have)

-VERY customizable sound settings.

-Radio tuner.

-Rockbox support.

Only real drawback of the player is that you have to hook it up to a PC USB port to charge it. No wall charging..though this really isn't a big deal given the massive battery life. Also, it does do video playback, but there's no H.264 support (if you don't know what that is, you aren't going to miss it. Most people just encode their stuff to Xvid or something similarly quick anyway.)

You can also run some flash applications on it, though I don't know much about that.

I've had 2 Creative Zen players, and from my experience the software is slow, and they break easily. I guess you get what you pay for. My original ipod mini lasted longer than both of my Creative Zen players combined.

Most of them. :?

iPods are merely brand name. Most .mp3 players don't force you to have your music on the computer in order to keep it on your player.

lol ipod's are terrible.

The battery life is simply awful. Couldn't even freaking stay going just playing music through one day of school AND it ended up randomly breaking in my pocket....

I got a Zune myself but that cost me $200 (granted it might be cheaper now as my Zune has laster me for a while now). I will mirror the Creative Zen recommendations as a friend of mine had one that seemed pretty cool.

I have 2 SanDisk Sansa players and a Sony Walkman. My wife and son have Creative Zen Mosaics. I'd recommend all 3.

The Sansas have built-in microSD slots (both for easy music swapping and expandable storage capability), but their sound quality can be a bit distorted with too much bass.

The Walkman has the best sound of the 3, but the max volume on mine seems to be low (not a problem for me, since I rarely exceed 1/3 volume on any player, but it could be for someone else) and there's no expansion slot.

The Zens are okay: no expansion slot, but solid sound quality.

Battery life is pretty good (~40-50 hours). They require a USB connection to recharge, but some stores sell a USB adapter for wall sockets if that's an issue.

mines too. Just wish they can come up or someone can, a firmware so the media from the SD and main library can stream together perfectly. But w.e, its great to have a expansion of an extra 4 or more gbs if needed.

i had a creative zen as well, and i agree, the software does suck. and the media player it comes with, and the program it comes with to use to put songs on it, sucks. i dropped it no more times than i've dropped any of my ipods, and it has broken, while my ipods have managed to keep working (even though the nano's screen broke, but it was one of the first nanos, so meh). not to mention the thing is like a damn refridgerator.

We must have the older models, then. I haven't seriously looked since last year (everyone's happy with the players they own now), so any changes wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Its pretty clear now that ipods have terrible sound quality but they're a resilient bunch of machines. Friends i know stepped, sat and cracked the ipods and those poor little machines still try and serve their masters.

So creative zens have been dropped cause i really do hate the problems that has been said. Doesnt anybody know something about iRiver, they seem alright.

http://www.creative.com/products/mp3/ Creative has some great MP3 players. I always considered them the iPod alternative should price be an issue. They are still awesome quality and can do everything if not more than an iPod could do. iPod is just simplicity, that's why so many use it.

You can also run some flash applications on it, though I don't know much about that.

lmao you told us everything but the storage. It's probably got like 4 gigs.

Actually, I mentioned that it's a flash-based player. If you know anything about music players, that should give you an idea of the storage capacities available.

Anyway, it's up to 16GB, which is the same amount of storage as a basic Zune HD. Unlike the Zune HD, though, it has an expansion slot for SDHC flash memory. This means you can have up to an additional 32GB of storage..bringing it to a storage amount far higher than your average flash player.

So yeah. You're wrong ;)

You could get an older Ipod Nano (3rd, 4th gen) They're about £75 now. A modern Sony Walkman is also £75-£100. Both are really decent mp3 players.

If you want the best cheaper mp3 player I would say get a Zen, if you want the best quality get a Sony walkman. I have a touch and if all you want it for is music then it is no better than a much cheaper Zen, infact it is worse because iTunes restricts you so much until you read up on how to use it (menus are tucked away in stupid places, it isn't user friendly at all if you ask me).
