i have a Zune because i hate apple more then i hate Microsoft. Ive actually never seen an iRiver, but it looks decent after a google search. The new Sony Walkman are pretty high quality for a low price, also Creative labs Zen are good too.marcl18123wow thanx for the heads up, sony and creative will be something i'll consider.

Most of them. :?
iPods are merely brand name. Most .mp3 players don't force you to have your music on the computer in order to keep it on your player.
lol ipod's are terrible.
The battery life is simply awful. Couldn't even freaking stay going just playing music through one day of school AND it ended up randomly breaking in my pocket....
I got a Zune myself but that cost me $200 (granted it might be cheaper now as my Zune has laster me for a while now). I will mirror the Creative Zen recommendations as a friend of mine had one that seemed pretty cool.
I have 2 SanDisk Sansa players and a Sony Walkman. My wife and son have Creative Zen Mosaics. I'd recommend all 3.
The Sansas have built-in microSD slots (both for easy music swapping and expandable storage capability), but their sound quality can be a bit distorted with too much bass.
The Walkman has the best sound of the 3, but the max volume on mine seems to be low (not a problem for me, since I rarely exceed 1/3 volume on any player, but it could be for someone else) and there's no expansion slot.
The Zens are okay: no expansion slot, but solid sound quality.
Battery life is pretty good (~40-50 hours). They require a USB connection to recharge, but some stores sell a USB adapter for wall sockets if that's an issue.
Actually, my Zen has an SD card slot. mines too. Just wish they can come up or someone can, a firmware so the media from the SD and main library can stream together perfectly. But w.e, its great to have a expansion of an extra 4 or more gbs if needed.I've got a Creative Zen and it works like a charm.

My original ipod mini lasted longer than both of my Creative Zen players combined.i had a creative zen as well, and i agree, the software does suck. and the media player it comes with, and the program it comes with to use to put songs on it, sucks. i dropped it no more times than i've dropped any of my ipods, and it has broken, while my ipods have managed to keep working (even though the nano's screen broke, but it was one of the first nanos, so meh). not to mention the thing is like a damn refridgerator.[QUOTE="marcl18123"]i have a Zune because i hate apple more then i hate Microsoft. Actually, my Zen has an SD card slot.We must have the older models, then. I haven't seriously looked since last year (everyone's happy with the players they own now), so any changes wouldn't surprise me in the least.I've got a Creative Zen and it works like a charm.

ipod and zune are both expensive crap. I have the sandisk sansa fuse 4 gb and I only aid $50 for it plus I got a 8gb micro sd for $18.Its pretty clear now that ipods have terrible sound quality but they're a resilient bunch of machines. Friends i know stepped, sat and cracked the ipods and those poor little machines still try and serve their masters.
So creative zens have been dropped cause i really do hate the problems that has been said. Doesnt anybody know something about iRiver, they seem alright.
My ipod has gone 3 school days of me having my music turned on throughout the day so I don't know why your complaining about the battery lifelol ipod's are terrible.

http://www.creative.com/products/mp3/ Creative has some great MP3 players. I always considered them the iPod alternative should price be an issue. They are still awesome quality and can do everything if not more than an iPod could do. iPod is just simplicity, that's why so many use it.
The one I'm using is the Sansa Fuze from SanDisk. Its a pretty good player, but the battery life isn't that long.

lmao you told us everything but the storage. It's probably got like 4 gigs.
I have a 120 Gb Zune. The player itself is very good, but the Windows software for it is really sluggish.

If you want the best cheaper mp3 player I would say get a Zen, if you want the best quality get a Sony walkman. I have a touch and if all you want it for is music then it is no better than a much cheaper Zen, infact it is worse because iTunes restricts you so much until you read up on how to use it (menus are tucked away in stupid places, it isn't user friendly at all if you ask me).
