What's the best way to see a ghost, spirit or demon (eg the pink ones in Doom)?

This thread is an extension of the other one on ghosts and spirits. I don't believe in them because I've never experienced them, but I'd like to. In my 29 years of living, I've never seen anything of the sort, so... how do I go about seeing a ghost or spirit? It has to be something I can do by myself too, as I doubt I could find people who are willing participants.
