A cult is any social group with beliefs and practices that the surrounding population considers to be outside the mainstream.

Usually that cults are not mainstream, but there are of course some very little known religions as well.

That's kind of what I'd say too.

The difference is popularity.

A guy on a different website said this,

"A cult is usually defined as a "a religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader", is also often considered as a "obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing". It is also characterized for being "young in years of existence" and having usually "only relatively few followers".

A religion in change is defined as a "personal or institutionalized system grounded in the belief, worship and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe". It also has a "set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader". Religions are usually "ancient or very old in years" and have "millions of followers".

Therefore, a religion is not necessarily a cult, but a cult is always a religion. Being a cult a religion usually characterized by radicalism, oddness, obsession, short number of years, small number of followers and guidance by a founder who almost all the times tend to be authoritarian. Another particularity is that in cults, you found that in many cases the cult-followers worship the founder as God himself.

About the comments (with bad ratings) :( I don't know why some people think that Jehova's Witnesses and Mormons are cults. They comply with every requisite to be religions and not to be considered cults. Besides, I used the words "usually" and "relatively" referrering to the small number of followers. You can't put in the same category the "Mormon Church" and the "Cult of the Followers of the Purple Rose"!"

Not really, a cult can also mean a group of persons who like art, music, writing, faction and fiction that are outside the mainstream hence the term "cult following".

A cult harms its members or non-members, separates them from family or friends who are critical of that cult, demands a lot of money from its members, controls all the information and finances of its members, things like that. A religion does not.

Therefore, a religion is not necessarily a cult, but a cult is always a religion.

Not all cult leaders are considered spiritual. Sometimes they're just very, very influential or charismatic. If he wanted, Obama could probably start a cult due to his immense popularity, as well as several rock stars, without including religion at all.

IMO, a cult requires money or demands doing something considered wrong. i.e. murder, theft, mass suicide, etc.

A cult is generally a much smaller religious group that has a single, very charismatic leader.

Cults are secretive and usually include seclusion or rejection of society in order to operate.

Generally, the leaders are over-controlling and demand money and complete devotion of their followers.

Cults don't molest alter boys.Ultimator777

I loled just a little bit. In a sad sort of way.

Anyway, to me the line between a religion and a cult is really fuzzy. Whats the difference between extorting someone materially (a cult) and spiritually (if you don't do X you'll go to hell,as in religion)

I get that not all religions are like that, but a lot of the major ones really are.

Only because cults don't have alter boys, so they just molest regular boys. But srsly, it was a joke.

Only because cults don't have alter boys, so they just molest regular boys. But srsly, it was a joke.

Actually, a lot of cults here in America practice multiple marriages with underage women and father children with them at ages as early as 12. Then when they're singled out, they often resort to fanatical violence and extreme tactics of deception to keep up their theater of operations, often also banishing most boys born into colonies so that they can harvest the younger females.

Generally, these people go without identification of any kind, including social security numbers or birth certificates, therefore making their very existence impossible to prove sometimes even with a body if the leaders decided they need to get rid of somebody.

It's as if they never existed, but that doesn't stop them from being forced to wed old men and have babies at age 12 while their mothers sit idly by and let the horror pass.
