Since most people are about to start or have started going back to school, I thought I'd make this topic in honor of the new academic year. So, in your history of academia what's been the class that you personally found to be the most difficult?

For me that class was organic chemistry. The amount of information you had to memorize and understand in that class was monumental, to say nothing of how deeply intricate the problems could get at times.

Either my electro-magnetism course or my static forces course last year. In my electro-magnetism course the final score on the midterm was 31%

Both organic and inorganic chemistry were a pain. I'd have to say AP physics in h.s.

Physical science. It wasn't that it was very hard, it's just that our teacher happened to be good at making the entire cIass fall asleep.

Math 203 (at college). Actually, it wasn't that hard until it got to compact metric spaces, which I had a good deal of trouble with...

I've never really taken any really hard classes.:?

Actually I did have a really hard history course. It was basic, but the teacher always covered more "in-depth" topics than what we were tested on. I did well on most of the tests, but the class average was less than 50%. And it was freshman year of highschool. :o

But I do have AP Chemistry in a couple weeks. Everyone else going into it already took the basic chemistry course, except me and one other kid. I only know the symbols of about five elements. This is going to be fun.

I'm presuming one of the two math courses this year, and then next year it might be one of those two.
That, or Chemestry or Physics, as I've only done small units of them, not complete clas$es before.

Edit: What the heck are these "AP _______" cla$ses? Is it just advanced courses?
(If it is, imagine an "advanced" before the clas$es I meantioned; they're all advanced...)

Believe me, that's only the tip of the iceberg as far as chemistry goes. Orgo makes gen chem look like middle school chemistry. Biochem makes orgo look like gen chem. And Physical chemistry is what convinces chemistry majors that there is no god. Or so I hear, I've yet to take biochem (or any other chem above orgo) and I'm not in much of a hurry :P

Quantum Mechanics.

  • There were only 2 students in the class.
  • In order to do my homework, I first had to spend a weekend in the library teaching myself some math I hadn't seen before.
  • All the exams were face-to-face with the prof. (answer questions verbally, solve equations while he watched, etc.)

I've never taken any real challenging courses, I'm a writing dork so I usually take that kind of stuff and it is all very easy to me. I am incredibly bad at math though, so math throughout my HS years was torture, as easy as it may seem to some of you it was hair pullingly difficult for me.

In a class like that it's probably something like: prof: "I think you will do good in this field. You pass. You may add me onto your curriculum vitae" :P

It's probably Software Development. I dropped it a year ago, and I'm taking it again this semester. We have to jump into learning Java, although it is pretty similar to C++ which we've had 3 prior courses in. There's no partial credit except for the final project. You know the debuggers that you use in programs to check your code for syntax and stuff? Our final project is to program our own debugger. VERY few people succesfully finish it lol.

Just plain Chemistry. Closest I ever came to failing a class in high school. It was the only class I ever had lower than a C in. Ever. Passed with a 62 I believe. It was harder then any of the advanced/college courses I took too. More than half the class actually did fail and a bunch of parents got pissed. That teacher was a monster.

Organic chemistry was difficult for me because I am more of a math based person, however the hardest class I took was an upper division course on Cardiac, Respiratory, and Renal Physiology. Good God our teacher made that class freakishly hard (and the material was very difficult to begin with). So if anybody goes to UC Davis avoid NPB 113 like the plague.

Heh. If he could of, he would of... but the dean says letter grades must be given. So I received an A-. I flubbed a few too many times with the funky math to get a full A.

The good thing about this new school is the classes are harder. At my old school you had your normal class and then you had your lower ranked classes.

That I finished? Honors Calc III at Georgia Tech. That I dropped? Intro to Ordinary Partial Differential Equations, a grad level course that I approached with unwarranted hubris my sophomore year. I thought, "Partial differential equations are easy, I aced DiffEqs with a 98 average, so this should be cake." The level of rigor was quite humbling.

Hermeneutics. And because I know most of you will have no idea what that means, I shall define it for you. Hermeneutics is the art of interpreting Scripture. What was taught in this class was understanding the importance of literary genre and context, realizing the effect of the historical context, looking at the grammar of the text, finding out how to do word studies, etc. The class required between 2-5 hours to do the assignments, not to mention the reading and 30 page paper that was an exegesis of a passage of Scripture typically about 8 verses long.

Or more generally, a broad framework for interpretation; I learned the term from the Sokal hoax, and that isn't Biblical at all :)

Indeed it can be used for other things, but most of the time it is speaking of Scripture. Even here it says, "The theory and methodology of interpretation, especially of scriptural text."

Anything with Dannete Coughlin (teacher)honestly turns into the hardest class ever and I become overly stressed about it and it becomes harder still.
