*********************BEFORE YOU READ THIS PLEASE NOTE POSSIBLE SPOILERS ON 'I AM LEGEND' MOVIE AS I USE THIS AS MY MAIN POINT OF DISCUSSION******************************

I thought I would start a thread about this after watching 'I am legend' the other day for the first time. I know some parts of the story chugged along a bit, but overall I consider it one of the best movies I have ever seen. It seemed so real and so visceral at times, it really left me thinking about it afterwards. Like 'what if that did happen? What if i was will smith, would I be scared, would I peep out the windows at night and risk being seen? Would I even get to sleep each night? Would I be afraid that one of the monster things got an immunity to sunlight and tracked me down when I was out and about in daylight? Did Fred really turn his head or was it just me?!! Ha you get what I mean.

Does anyone else feel the same about this movie or has had a similar experience after watching other movies?

I will say...Life is Beautiful, or more specifically, La Vita e Bella due to it's being in Italian. Truly a beautiful movie.

Probably the Pursuit of Happyness. It wasn't that great a movie really, but it definately got me thinking about how you can accomplish a lot more than you'd think yourself capable of.

Im thinking of watching that. After seeing Will Smith's performance in I Am Legend, I think I might start going through his back catalogue. Oh yep that includes men in black as well! Have to say, Im feeling slightly uncultered after hearing all of your suggestions, I mean 'I am legend' is no 'saving private ryan' or 'La vita e bella' but was nonetheless poetic for me as it really did the all-alone-on-earth thing really well

If you liked I Am Legend go buy the book right now. Compared to the book, the movie is horrible, they kind of missed the entire point.

Pursuit of Happyness is a very good movie. Will Smith is fantastic in it.

Forrest Gump. I watched it for like the 4th time. Although people might have thought it was charming, I was kind of thinking it had a hidden meaning, about life.

I haven't watched any movies recently except Rambo (which I found to be horrible). School doesn't let me watch movies...LOL, but there are a TON I want to see.

Anyway, I had to watch A Knight's Tale (Heath Ledger) for a Brit Lit essay, and that kind of inspired me.. I'll post the essay to my blog once it's graded..I'm really happy with the essay :)

"Talk to Me" was the last excellent "wow movie" I've seen.

EDIT: And yes, go get the book right now, it's almost 100% different from the movie and if you want "real and visceral" then WOW, the movie sucks compared to the book. It's 160 pages of pure awesomeness. GO GET IT!

The movie was just a total bastardization, and it doesn't deserve the name I Am Legend. What's worse, is that people liked it.

Wow, Ive gotta get this book! Can anyone tell me (without giving anything away from the book, if poss) why this movie sucked so bad relative to its source material? Maybe I will feel the same once I read it but dont you guys agree the director/producer really captured the feeling of complete isolation (and going crazy because of it) really well? Bits in particular that really stood out is the scene at the beginning where hes in the bath tub with Sam and you can hear the howls of the creatures outside - sort of captures the 'alone' and 'totally vulnerable' feeling. Plus the video store where you are just willing one of the dummy things to turn its head or say something...or the scene where Sam goes into the dark warehouse thing and you get a taste of whats in there. Not just a good suspense movie, but also believably real i think.

After hearing you say that, I know that you're just gonna love the book lol. It's short too, so it shouldn't take long to finish, maybe 2 days at most.

Anyway yeah, I think the director did fine, but I still don't see why they changed the story up so much, he could have done a much better job with the way it was originally.

It's an independent movie and so probably not got a lot of recognition. It is very natural and doesn't feel like too "Hollywood." I think you'll understand when you get round to watching. One of the best independent movies I've ever seen.

That's one of the best films you've seen? Either we have totally different tastes or you haven't seen many movies. Anways, I'm not going to bug you about that.

I can't remember the last time a film has left a huge print on my mind, but one film that did leave a really huge print is Yi Yi. The way Edward Yang basically directs a film in which the story is about the ordinary life of ordinary people. It's basically like recording actual people doing what they do in life, but it's got a very special touch to it that really enhances and turns this ordinary story into a work of art.

In a way, the cinematography and lighting helps the viewer to sympathize with the characters for some odd reason (to me at least). He turns places that are familiar to most people into places with a special aura surrounding it: the beach, the sidewalk under a bridge, an office, and many other places. One scene that really sticks to my head is when one of the main characters is standing on a piece of concrete on the beach in Japan with the waves smashing against it while you see the the lights along the sidewalk and some of the buildings lit up (I don't remember whether it was morning time or afternoon time). When I saw that, I couldn't help feeling how special that looked even though it's not something that special at all. In a way, it sort of gives me a feeling of isolation in such an ambient place, which is something the character was probably feeling on his business trip to Japan. Those sort of things in any film really make an impression on me.

Anyways, enough about that. I highly recommend this to any of you who are interested in art film. Unfortunately, Edward Yang (the director) died after he released this film, so we won't be seeing anymore films from him. I haven't seen his films before Yi Yi, but I'm pretty glad that his last film ended up being this masterpiece.

If I had seen No Country For Old Men yet (I live in Europe so it just recently came to the theatres here) that would probably be it but as of right now it's "5 Centimeters Per Second". Truly one of the greatest movies I've ever seen.

You know, kinda glad I made thsi post now, this is another one to add to the list. Goodness knows where I will find it though, but I do like films with a bit of art direction in them too. I just mentioned 'I am legend' on this occasion as I had just seen it and it was fresh in my mind (still fresh infact, having trouble avoiding nightmares as I think about it before sleep every night ha). Tbh, as much as some people may give a great sigh at this, most of my film collection includes films such as Tom Cruise War of the Worlds, Matrix Revolutions and Ghostbusters etc so yep I do love a bit of hollywood action, but when a film grips me and entrances me, like YiYi has done for you, I find thats almost a priceless feeling.

There's nothing wrong with a little Hollywood entertainmnet, but there is one thing I must warn you about this film. This movie is almost three hours long and the average movie goer will definitely get bored. Even I thought it was boring when I first saw it -- I had to turn it off thirty minutes in and send it back. I gave it a second chance about a year later when I was used to more slow paced film and I was so overwhelmed by it. I had to buy it. So, if you're going to watch this film, don't turn it off. Just keep watching it. I won't be surprised if most people got bored by doing that, but I would urge people to give it another chance because when you pay attention to detail after the first viewing, it pays off. It sounds like you're interested in films with really nice visuals, so you might like it. You can rent it through Blockbuster.com, which is how I view a lot of films from other countries, or you can probably find a Criterion Collection version of the film, which I would definitely recommend because the picture quality is better than any other version, in a Barnes & Noble or on Amazon. However, that's if you're willing to buy it on the spot.

I was watching Spirited Away again a couple of weeks ago, and i only realised how amazing the train scene was.

Nothing particular happens, but the music and sound effects, combined with the cinematography... it's just plain beautiful, and breathtaking at times. It creates this strange, and a somewhat lonely atmosphere.

It's gotta be my favourite part of that movie.

Thanks, I might do it in 2 sittings then. Will be nice on a Sunday afternoon or something. As Im from the UK though, blockbuster.com is out the question and amazon.co.uk etc just have this film as region 1 which I have a feeling I can get to work using various software upgrades etc on my pc but Im not overly confident with that. Might import it anyway as it isnt too pricy. As we are on Gamespot, if you are into games etc it sounds like you are probably a fan of games like Okami, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and the little games like everyday shooter and maybe even rez? Where EA has the hollywood type games, these games are probably akin to Yi Yi etc and as I absolutely loved every one of them, I am feeling pretty confident I will like Yi Yi too.

To be honest, I wasn't big on Okami because I didn't really like the way the characters looked and spoke, but I loved the other games you mentioned. The only one that I haven't played from what you mentioned is Rez. Some games I can think of as unique in the way those are, are games like Jet Grind Radio or Oddworld: Abe's Oddyssey. I am a huge fan of those types of games and I'm really waiting for My Little Big Planet.

Other films that might interest you are films like Last Life In The Universe, In The Mood For Love, Talk To Her, and Amelie. Directors that definately put a lot of nice visuals in their films are directors like Park Chan-Wook, Pedro Almodovar, Jean Pierre Jeunete, Wong Kar Wai, and Wes Anderson.
