Technically I think it reduces your chances of getting it. I personally haven't gotten a flu shot in 6 years and haven't gotten the flu either.

From WebMD:

Flu Myth #3: The flu vaccine can give you the flu.

This is the flu myth most likely to drive experts bonkers. There is simply no way that the flu vaccine can give you the flu, says Hay. Its impossible.

Why? For one, injected flu vaccines only contain dead virus, and a dead virus is, well, dead: it cant infect you. There is one type of live virus flu vaccine, the nasal vaccine, FluMist. But in this case, the virus is specially engineered to remove the parts of the virus that make people sick.

Despite the scientific impossibility of getting the flu from the flu vaccines, this widespread flu myth wont die. Experts suspect two reasons for its persistence.  One, people mistake the side effects of the vaccine for flu. While side effects to the vaccine these days tend to be a sore arm, in the past, side effects often felt like mild symptoms of the flu. Two, flu season coincides with a time of year when bugs causing colds and other respiratory illnesses are in the air.  Many people get the vaccine and then, within a few days, get sick with an unrelated cold virus. However, they blame the innocent flu vaccine, rather than their co-worker with a runny nose and cough.

Flu shots (and vaccinations in general) are the government's way of brainwashing you and controlling you.

No Point what so ever. Ive had a kidney transplant which mean i can get it if i want. the Flu Jab not Flu it self :p. Recently got a letter asking if i wanted the flu jab but i signed it to say no as have done for last 5 years and seem to be ok. I was adviced against it by when i was on dialysis and the docs said same when i had the transplant. As if you did get the side effects it would just take as long any way to get rid of it and can have same effect as the flu.

MIND CONTROL! Serious answer: giving the immune system a chance to react to new strains of the virus before being exposed to infectious versions of them. The same goes for any vaccine. And one does not get the flu from a flu shot, they get it from being exposed to someone with the flu that wasn't included with the flu shot (evolution of viruses is impossible to keep up with).

First off flu shots don't make you sick.

Secondly, flu shots are ONLY supposed to be people who are elderly, work in the medical field, or have certain health problems like asthma.

Being that I work as a CNA and have asthma, getting a flu shot is a must for me. There is a HIGH potential for me to be exposed to the flu and when I get a flu bug it is WORSE for me thanks to my asthma which decides to kick in on top of the sickness and give me breathing issues.

The flu shots are very necessary. I have seen residents DIE from the flu when we have had flu outbreaks at work. It is one of the msot contagious viruses we have and it has the potential to be deadly.

Lets not forget that it was LESS than 100 years ago that the world got hit with the Spanish Flu pandemic which was one of the worst natural disasters in human history.

Yeah, they essentially try and figure out what will likely be the most widespread flus each season and put the top few into the flu shots to try and prevent them. The flu is just such a bastard of a virus that on top of it's high contagiousness and deadly potential it also constantly mutates and takes on different strains.

I didn't get the flu shot until my wife became pregnant and it was suggested that we immunize ourselves. Just because you get sick doesn't mean you've gotten in from someone who has had the vaccine. Many people don't get it and most flus are highly contagious.

It's this kind of misinformation that prevents people from getting vaccines, and not just for flu. Look at the measles outbreak in the mega church, or the increase in whopping cough cases around the country.

I wish people would actually take the time to look into **** before taking stupid stances like the anti-vaccine stance.

I seriously can't believe that even though it has been known for HOW LONG now that the initial study linking vaccines to autism was utter BS, there are still so many people going around talking about how bad vaccines are....

It lowers your chances of getting the flu although I haven't gotten the flu in forever, even when we had epidemic flu status at my college. So I don't bother getting it.

Don't trust anything that's free or is included with your insurance. Also the fact that they've come to call it herd immunity. They say this is the reason why you should get the flu shot. These people actual have the gall to call us animals to be herded. Many people eat it up. It's a poison, just like fluoride.

"Thank you, government. I can brush my teeth and spit out the fluoride on my own. I don't need it put into my drinking water."

Yea, because pretty much what they do is inject you with the virus, so your body can build up an immunity to it. Pretty pointless, you could just get it on your own and do the same thing. Supossedly it's not as bad if you go with the shot though.

The virus they inject you with is actually dead.

So you shouldn't actually get it when you are given the shot.

Evidence that some people will refuse to do something just because the government is in support of it, regardless of the science. That's more of herd mentality.

Well there is an AIDS vaccine in trial phase that shows promise. So I bet a lot of people won't get that because it promotes sex like the HPV vaccine. Or whatever other crazy reason.

You can get flu like symptoms after getting a vaccine, but all that is are side affects. You don't actually get the flu from it. Also, like someone else pointed out, they are only meant for certain people. A normal person like myself with no asthma and not working in the medical field shouldn't need to get one.

I've been getting a flu shot for at least 15 years now, and I've never come down with the flu after getting the shot. Neither has anyone in my family.

The problem is herd immunity only works when enough people are vaccinated. If large amounts of people don't get a vaccine everyone is at significantly more risk of getting the illness.

I have only had the flu once since I had it back in the mid-70s and that was a couple of years ago. I do not get the flu shot as a rule. When I was in the military, I had to get them and always felt rundown after getting them, not to mention, one left a small divot in my arm (air needles) after it became infected.

Now, there are people who cannot take the flu shot due to how they are made. They use eggs to incubate the virus on and anyone allergic to eggs can suffer from anaphylactic shock and death due to that. While the number of persons affected might be small, the possibility is still there.

And there are versions of the flu vaccine made now that aren't based on eggs. What you describe is typical of a reaction to any shot, not necessarily the flu vaccine in particular.

I've had it the last couple of years since we started having kids, so as to avoid picking up that particular strain and giving it to them or getting it if they pick it up. I get it free at work early on the season (health industry) though I don't work directly with any patients. Don't really see a point in not getting it. Worse that happens is you have a slightly sore arm for a day or two, and that's one less variety of the flu to potentially get that year. Carry the anti-vaccination thing much further and you get into the territory of people who won't vaccinate their kids, and it's those sort of people that are going to cause some serious issues later on. It's pretty goddamn selfish of them to put their kids at risk out of some misplaced fear of nonexistent vaccine side effects. Sure, skip your kid's shots, see if that 1 in 2 million chance of contracting a serious side effect is a trade-off worth them picking up a pneumococcal infection as a newborn or pretty much anything else they haven't been immunized against. And the more nutcases who avoid that, the more common it will be, again.

The DEAD virus, not a live one.

I get the flu shot every year, and I haven't had the flu for 6, maybe 7 years. I definitely see the benefit in it.

Evidence that some people will refuse to do something just because the government is in support of it, regardless of the science. That's more of herd mentality.

States are evil. Spin around that fact.

Yea, because pretty much what they do is inject you with the virus, so your body can build up an immunity to it. Pretty pointless, you could just get it on your own and do the same thing. Supossedly it's not as bad if you go with the shot though.

TINYOWNSYOU

The DEAD virus, not a live one.

I get the flu shot every year, and I haven't had the flu for 6, maybe 7 years. I definitely see the benefit in it.

I haven't had a Flu shot in over two decades and I haven't had the Flu in over two decades.

It doesn't take a "scientist" to figure out all government oppresses it's people. For you? Maybe a consensus of them.

disregarding something just because it is endorsed by the government, is just as stupid as accepting it just because the government endorses it

Better get yourself a gas mask to make sure those chem trails don't get you then. Might as well cover your walls in lead paint so their HAARP machine can't penetrate your walls as well.

If the government is trying to oppress its people by spreading vaccinations and fluoridated water then they're doing a pretty bad job at the oppression game.  Both of those practices are doing a damn good job at keeping the population alive and healthy.  They are easily two of the most important public health policies of the 20th century, with vaccinations being THE MOST IMPORTANT.
