What's the point of learning stuff in school if you just forget it?

I don't remember anything I learned in high school. I learned stuff, made good grades, but then forgot everything in less than a year later. Took psychology in highschool, then took it again in college. I know I learned a lot of the same material in HS but I had to re learn it all again, same with history. And I know I'll just forget all this stuff again in the future. Already I don't remember half of the stuff I learned in biology last year. A lot of stuff was interesting, but really what did I get out of any of these classes? Close to nothing...

Education is a continuing process. You'll find out later that some of the more practical things you learn have good uses.

To me, there's stuff that you should learn, and stuff that really needs to be optional. But on the overall, it's just stuff that makes you look good for college, and then for a job.

So your saying that since high school you've forgotten everything?

What about maths. Do you still know how to do maths? Probably

What about English. Can you no longer write essays etc.?

I think you can see where I am going with this.

So, what you're saying is that either you're an idiot and the grading system is based off of work ethic rather than information retention, or you're an idiot and school is a very important breeding ground for basic learning skills?ConformestClone
I guess the first one if I must choose. I can study and hold a bunch of information to pass a test, but that information only stays there for so long.

The purpose of school is to get socially active/meet new people and get new friends, as well as make sure have get a good work ethic for the future when you go to college, and then get a job.

Basically, school isn't about learning a bunch of random info, it is to prepare you for the future.

You remember a lot of what you learn in school. Besides school is also there to make social interactions and help you form an opinion and developed mind. The process of learning helps you to become a smarter and more rounded person. You may not remember anything, but you still learn the experiences you had.

I actually forgot a ton of math since highschool, and I have been re learning in my classes. I'm sure I will forget math again after I'm finished with college. The only thing I learned from English class is how to BS papers.

Yeah, it's crazy how much math CS/engineering majors have to go through, and after they graduate most likely they will never use it again.

Unless they actually make it into a CS or engineering career :P Have any idea how much calculus goes into a simple design for a bottle? You've got to minimize that plastic and maximize that volume and stuff, yo.

Because school is mostly there to train you to a certain way of doing things. Remembering what you've learned is just a bonus. It's also to keep you out of trouble while you're young. I've forgotten a lot of stuff I learned in high school also (mostly history), but then again, I've been out of high school for quite a while.

I'm in grade 10 and this year i'm starting to realize that the stuff we're learning is actually important, at least for the type of job i want. but i still think they give us too much information in such a short period of time, you will forget most of the things they teach.

It's because you cram for tests instead of studying a bit each day using breaks for like 2 weeks.

Cramming will keep the info in your brain for about 2-4 days or so, and you will soon forget it.

Studying a bit every day can help you retain information because it's like a daily routine, meaning your mind is being refreshed and soon it'll be hard for you to forget it. Just like the languages, we remember english everyday because we practised it for so long, we are able to remember sophisticated synonyms to different words because we used it everyday in small increments for weeks - not just saying it one 300x.

Well thats a bad analogy but seriously if you dont cram it stays in your mind.

The only way I study is by cramming and I still remember a lot from most of my cIasses. I still remember stuff from back in high school and I didn't even study back then. In contrast I know people who study as a daily routine and can't remember jack squat from cIasses they took last year or even last semester.

A lot of it doesn't necessarily depend on how you study, it depends on how interested you were by what you were learning, how often you use it, and how good your memory is in general. For example, in cIasses that I loved going to I didn't even need to take notes or study and I could still get A's without much trouble, and I still vividly remember what I learned in them years later. In contrast, with cIasses that I didn't really care about I had to take notes, study, and my memory of what I learned in there isn't as good as with other cIasses. It also helps that as a science major a lot of my cIasses are intertwined with each other so that I'm constantly being reminded of what I've learned in other cIasses.

The more you have to learn to get to a certain career the harder it is to get to that career and the less people who will get there. We don't need alot of surgeons so you have to go through test after test to get there, cutting the percentage of people who will become surgeons to an acceptable amount. In contrast, you don't have to learn that much to be a shop assistant. To be honest, you don't need the vast majority of things you learn to do a specific job. For example, they can programme machinery to do certain surgical procedures. Does that machinery need to know extensive amounts of biology and chemistry crap? No, it just needs to know how to do it's job. The same goes for people.

School subjects are easy to remember for some, but not so much for others. For example, I tend to remember more information from my english and newspaper classes because that's the profession I want to go into. It just depends how the person receives the information, I think.

It helps keep your brain to be active, which is a good thing.

By the time you hit 20 something, your brain will be less powerful. At least gather some information from your teachers.

Its not so much the stuff they teach you, its to prepare you to learn things in your working life. Most of mathematics is completely useless in the real world. But the intellect it takes to learn it is a valuable skill.

Well even though you forget stuff, all of it is in your mind and will help you when you try to learn it. Also, most of the stuff, you don't forget. Also, if you are taking the class in college you might use stuff you learned in highschool.

Yes, sorry chacobo7000, but you have no idea what you are talking about. Engineers, Economists, and a lot of other people use calculus all of the time for a ton of stuff. As for computer science, you don't really need calculus most of the time, and that is why they are trying to get it dropped from the requirements for ABET accreditation (or so I have heard)

Most of the information you learn in high school and undergrad is utterly worthless in the real world.

If you can read, write, and do basic math, you know enough to function in society.

School is a system to develop and promote the basics of learning. I may remember nothing about history but now i do have a certain ethereal memory of it all. I now can filter and choose what i want to learn, and what i don't care about. That is the case with many of the things we learn at school. It basically teaches us to learn, and gives us enough knowledge to have a reasonably decent life. It certainly isn't done in the best way though, and that is a problem that plagues a lot of developed countries.

Most people are in for the diploma. That's all.

But school teaches you math, communication, and writing skills. Most of that happens in K-6.

Gr 7 and 8 are completely pointless, based from my experiences.

High school is ALL about the marks. That's it.

If you saved any of your schoolwork from 1st grade go back and look at it. Are you saying that you are just as intelligent now as you were then? If you didn't go to school you would be bad at reading and you probably wouldn't be able to write anything comprehensive. You would also be terrible at math and science. You might forget specific things but overall you learn a lot. Do you honestly not realize the benefits of education?

Many homeschooled people learn just fine. I'm self learning Japanese and my reading speed is not a problem at all, it's faster than my English if I know the kanji. I won't glorify first grade just because it taught me to read and write, I could've done it myself anyway.

If you actually learn something, you don't forget it; the information you don't use is stored in a mental "compartment" of sorts in your mind that holds onto it if you ever need it again; hence why we sometimes need a "refresher course" to open up that compartment and dust off what's inside. When you don't learn in school, that's called "wasting time and money."
