Apparently if you are a "hardcore" metal fan or in a metal band, you have to have long hair.

But what the hell does this accomplish? To be honest most guys simply don't look good with long hair. Are people afraid to be called posers or something if they have shorter hair?

That's cool and all if you're in some band and you know how to take care of yourself. But I'm going through all of these videos with people covering metal songs and every single one of these covers are by pale skinny kids with really long greasy looking hair.

When you play an instrument for a living, you can't afford a haircut.

This doesn't apply to music that old people listen to because their sensibilities won't stand for it.

For some reason, head banging just doesn't seem like a great reason for really long hair. Look at the lead singer in Meshuggah, he's bald and he doesn't have any problems head banging.

I've seen a recent trend of rock fans with hair like Final Fantasy characters.

Kinda like this...

its more popular in some genres of metal than others.

The long hair thing is mostly in death and black metal (aka the tr00 metal) which I don't really listen to.

because headbanging is more visually appealing with longer hair. :)

Here's something to compare with: the guy in right, or the guy in the center.

And I just think long hair is awesome for the reason that headbanging is a lot funner with it. I remember when I had really short hair, it felt really funny, but now with longer hair, it feels more natural.

That anime guy isnt metal at all, all those "things" (emos) with anime hair like that really arent anything just messed up kids. As for long hair I have it down to my chest, girls seem to like it though, I like it, makes headbanging look better, also makes me look like a barbarian but thats all cool. Theres nothing wrong with it anyways. I dont get what people have against it honestly? \m/.

...A lot of the people I know that are into metal have short hair...and work out a lot...for some reason.

I have long hair and generally don't like metal...

I guess they are too busy too care for their hair. Hence, long stringy, greasy hair.

I have a lot of friends that are into Metal that have short hair. But I myself have long hair, not because I listen to Metal, but because I look much better with long hair than I do with short hair.

"show no fear, ATACK!"

saw them in concert, twas awesome. and the lead singer is friggin tall.

as for the visually appealing argument i agree, but would add links to scandanavian influence. i usually shave my head before concerts though and i'm never stopped from headbanging.

What's with Country and the hats? What's with emo and the tight pants and make-up? What's with...well you get the idea. They are just things that become associated with the genre. Thus, people find it cool to emulate their favorite musicians.

After I cut my hair, which was shoulder-length, headbanging and windmilling hurt a lot for some reason so I rarely do it anymore. But with long hair, it doesn't hurt at all. Weird... (O_O)
