I cant help but notice how kids these days are different,Kids aged between 7 and 11 .When I was 9 years old, all I wanted was a bike to ride. I loved riding bikes and playing outside all day long. These days , I see my 9 year old cousin begging his mom to get him video games and gaming systems. He doesn't even have a bike, heck he cant even ride one yet.He never plays outside like I used to do at his age. Another example is my 10 year old niece. Shes only 10 yet she has a Facebook account, MSN account and she watches stuff on Youtube all the time.

When my brother and I were 10, we didnt even know how to use the computer. The other day I was watching a tv show, it was about a fat 11 year old girl. When asked about why she likes to eat so much, she said it was because shes "stressed" out . 11 years old and stressed out ? I cant even imagine what condition she'll be in when shes 30. 11 year olds are supposed to watch power rangers or pokemon or something. Not talk about how stressed out they are. I don't know whats happening to our world. I was 10 only 5 years ago, Im surprised with the speed of change that occured. Have you also noticed this ?

I noticed that too. I think decrease in such trends is contributing to childhood obesity.

No but then I don't spend a lot of time with kids. I will say however that every kid needs to learn to ride a bike and swim and what not. However you can't expect kids to understand as little about technology as you did when you were there age because technology has become increasingly user friendly and fun.

I'm 21 now but when I was that young I was outside ALL the time, riding bikes, making forts, finding my neighbor's neighbor's stash of pr0n in his garage. The only time I played video games was on rainy days and at night time, good ole mortal kombat 1 from the genesis was where it was at, I didn't have a computer til I was like 12, when there was no social networking sites I went on, just starcraft.

lol, as I was reading this I imagined an old man reminiscing about the old days. No offense. But to answer your question, yeah i have. the thing is that the parents aren't taking a more active part in their children's lives. Encourage them to go out side and do something a bit more productive.

Technology and such has advanced rapidly leading to more accessibility to various things such as computers or games. Although video games were a wanted item for a long while (since before 2000) . In your case it seems like you may have not particularly seen that this was occuring 5 years ago as well. The main blame are the parents.

When i was 10 me and a close friend used to build dams all the time and race with our moutain bikes around doing crazy things. :D Then i kinda got addicted to PC games when i was 12 for a while but i started comming out of it around 2 years ago. I still like playing but i spend alot more time just hanging out with friends or watching hilarius **** on youtube :D

But i did have a MSN account since... A long time ago hehe :D

It seems like an overall trend to me. I see this with my cousin as he is all about video games. I guess it is because of where we are at today in terms of technology. Spending more time with technology (video games, internet, etc.) has become more "normal".

Paradigm shift in what you call entertainment,. Not always implies a long span of time for a change to happen. Similar happens to videogames. In 1970 you had no clue what that could be. By 1980 they were the law.

Kids have been asking for video games and such things since the late 1980's. That's nothing new.

As for the stressed out girl, her stress probably isn't related to work or life pressures, but rather bullying at school and/or a psychological issue that makes her extremely oversensitive to stressors. It could also just be her making excuses, but I'd be willing to put my money on bullying-related stress seeing as how this girl was apparently fat enough to draw the attention of a TV show.

I used to do that. I would sit inside and go on the computer the whole day. But now, I opened my eyes, and love being outside.

Now my sister too the same road I did. She's never outside. Last time she went outside to play was like a week ago at her birthday party.

I dont mind the gaming at young age but not playing out at all is a problem... not developing bone density and a few other things gives them more work later in life if they want to play sport. And the number of fat kids is probably going to rise.... oh well :)

I agree with you, but to a certain point. While kids these days have access to more TV, Video games, Etc, not every kid in this generation stays home and watches TV. My idea is that it has alot to do with the social condition and enviroment that the child lives in. For example myself, I lived in a really ghetto place when I was grwoing up, were not having money was nothing new. This made the kids more dependent on keeping themselfs entertained with other friends, insted of playing GTA4 all day.

Just my thought though

I volunteered at a community center once, with the after school program, and although odd kids, they seemed fairly "normal" in the sense that they liked to bike and play outside and such. Although I admit, it was really weird to find some of them had Facebook accounts and stuff, and watched music videos on youtube. I guess with the advancement of such technology, it's only up to parents to monitor their kids and be responsible about it. Although it's good to give the kid a bit of freedom as well.

People at your age decades ago played outside and hung out with friends, why are you on the computer? According to your logic, you shouldn't be on here as well.

When my brother and I were 10, we didnt even know how to use the computer. The other day I was watching a tv show, it was about a fat 11 year old girl. You don't know what her life is like, and there definetely was kids like her when you were five and WAY before that, but you were not alive and too young to notice it, and now you are.

Overall life is getting more stressful, but this is because more oppurtunities are opening up for kids and Adults alike.

I rather think the Parents would have to take some responsibility.

My grandkids come over; they are allowed to play 1 hour a day each on video games. Otherwise, they color, go to the childrens library, to the park, the zoo, on walks. We try hard to make sure they have a good dose of healthy fun.

I'm not sure we should "get used" to sedentary children. Parents need to do something about it if they actually care about their children's future health.

As times change, so do hobbies? Get used to it.

I'm not sure we should "get used" to sedentary children. Parents need to do something about it if they actually care about their children's future health.

Sadly, I went through the same thing. I was never encouraged to exercise. Now it's very difficult for me to exercise, let alone lose weight. It definitely takes a toll on one's physical well-being. But parents ignore it and assume the PE in schools will help their children. (The average quality of PE sessions is plummeting, however.)

I hate to point fingers, but I think it's the parents. Parents these days don't seem to care anymore.

Parents should not forget that children, no matter how bright, need guidence and supervision.

Nowadays kids who honestlyspend most of their time outside are usually out hunting deer. You can be surprised how benefical hunting is these days. And if the anti-hunters had their way; more kids will grow fat playing video games.

yeah thats why when i'll have kids it'll be no videogames whatsoever till they're at least 10. Kids need to exercise their imagination and creativity by drawing, doing sports, playing with lego, etc... Thats how i was raised and even though it sucked at the time, I'm happy they did that :)
