As the amount of the tip is up to the customer, the money a server can earn off any given check can vary widely. In a recent Freakonomics podcast, Cornell Professor of Consumer Behavior and Marketing Michael Lynn lists specific physical attributes that seem to earn servers larger tips: blondes get better tips than brunettes, slimmer women get better tips than heavier ones, larger breasted women get better tips overall, and women in their 30s get better tips than ones that are younger or older. Tipping can also be gender-discriminant; Lynn says that "men's appearance doesn't matter as much" to tipping customers. And the kicker is that the customer's ability to tip really doesn't make that much of a difference in the level of service. "Tips are not as strongly related to service as you would expect, only about a 0.2 correlation," explains Lynn. Even longtime waiter and book author Steve Dublanica concedes that the "quality of service has almost nothing to do with the tip a server receives." In fact, Freakonomics sums tipping up as an "awkward, random, confusing ... and probably discriminatory" act. http://eater.com/archives/2013/06/05/tipping.php

it's not, but I do find it interesting that regardless of the food price virtually the same work is done no matter the restaurant. Do people who do serve more expensive food work substantially harder than those who server cheaper food? If not why do they deserve more money?

Don't get me wrong I understand societal norms, it's just that this one is particularly easy to poke logical holes in.

Well usually you do have better service at more expensive restaurants or at least i have. They also usually have less tables and less people to serve so they need more money per table due to people staying and eating longer at nice restaurants compared to cheaper places.

I tip based on friendliness, and service. If you seem like a happy person, and if you never have me thirsty you'll easily get $5+.

I tip based on service and whether or not I have cash on me. Not to mention if I'm trying to save money I aint paying any extra. I have no regrets the (here at least) states if an employees wages are made mostly through tips and they dont at least get what they would make getting paid minimum, then the restatarunt has to cover it.

So they aren't losing anything. If I'm gonna give someone extra money, I want to have impressive service. Also, fvck the bullshit having there tip based on what I get. I can go to red lobster and either spend 10  bucks or over 30. If the service is shit, they arent getting anything either way. If I'm impressed and pleased, its gonna be 5 bucks either way. Just because the cooks made soemthing better, doesnt mean the server worked harder.

Service makes a difference in how I tip and I've noticed that servers remember you when you tip well and give you even better service when you return.

What's wrong with tipping in general (not for food) is that it's gotten difficult to tell when it's appropriate to tip.

I tip based upon the preformance for any staff that interacts with me.

since the majority of tips especially credit card based tips are given on a percentage and aren't solely given to just the waitress. So based upon the waitress or waiters abilities and the cooks abilities I give a tip the lowest being a Single penny which I keep with me so If a meal is particularly bad I leave the penny as a tip, with a written note on the back with what was wrong, That is If the meal is worthwhile in the least otherwise I often send the food back pay for my drink and leave.

The highest tip I've given is 50 dollars.
1.Waitress was fing hot.
2. steak was amazing.
3.  Waitress was smart, paid attention and made sure she asked after me every 7-10 minutes to make sure my beverage was filled.

Nothing. Cow topping is fun until you tip a bull. Seriously though, I have never and will never tip.

I tend to tip two dollars to about seven dollars depending how good the waiter/waitress is.

I tip them based on their time and efforts. Considering how hard they work I believe a waiter or waitress between whatever amount of tables the waiter/waitress has they should be making around $50 an hour. I work for tips and I'm hardly working for the most part and I average $35 an hour. Depending on where they work they can average around $100 an hour. I look at it like this. $21 an hour is equivalent to minimum wage or what minimum wage should be. I tip them based on what I would want to make if I was in that position. Treat people the way that you want to be treated. :)

Whoever can up with the concept of tipping should be burned alive. Foolish system. But since I have no choice in the matter I usually just give a straight up 10% tip.

The only thing about tipping is sometimes you don't know who to tip. Like my mom being financially successful - she likes to tip young people who aren't even working just because she feels bad that they're poor.

Nothing. I just tip based on the courtesy system, same as most people. If you were friendly, attentive, and made the dinner enjoyable, you get 20%.

If you were just average, 15%

If you were horrible (and this has only happened once to me, ever. Waitress flipped shit on me because I asked her if I could change my side a few minutes after I ordered it. I'm not sure if she was either crazy or just having a bad day), you get nothing. It would take someone just being a horrible person for me not to tip. If you accidentally spill my drink, drop my food, write my order down wrong, etc., just mistakes we all make, that has no effect on what I think of the service. I tip based on how you are as a person.

Resturants I tip 20%

Haircut that costs $15 I'll tip $5

I don't normally tip into tip jars though.Â
