[QUOTE="Singularity22"][QUOTE="bt_the_great_78"]I'm 30, and an officer in the Marine Corps. I've got at least another 9 years until retirement. But, after this I'm looking to get into federal law enforcement or private security. Then again, I'll probably change my mind a few times by the time I get out.bt_the_great_78
Im currently 22, but when I was 21, I applied for a State Police job twice. Both times I made it past the written tests but fumbled at the interview. The second time around they told me that I had potential but that I was very young and needed some life experience. So after some hard thinking Ive decided to enlist in the Coast Guard and join up with their Maritime Enforcement. After I get out, Im considering either the State Police again or a Federal Law Enforcement.
Don't get me wrong, I'd never advise anyone against serving their country, but from what I'm told from buddies of mine in military police, serving in the military's law enforcement curries no favor with civilian law enforcement agencies. In fact, they often prefer someone who is a clean slate so they don't have to go through all the differences with every new candidate. Now, I don't know if that's true with the Coast Guard as well, or even if it's true anymore with the Marines, but it's worth looking into if that's the sole reason for you joining. To me, it makes no sense. Any potential negatives surrounding re-teaching someone are outweighed by what is said about someone who is willing to serve their country honorably and works in that kind of environment. Wow, I never thought about that. I guess they think of it as teaching an old dog new tricks?
When I was talking to a Trooper before my Interview/Situational Judement Scenarios, they asked what I had done to prepare for it and one of the things I mentioned was that I did a ride along with my uncle who is a City Police Officer. They said that it was good, but dont let my uncle's agency's policies and procedures heavily influence my answers to the scenarios because each group does things differently.
But anway, the sole reason for me joining the Coast Guard is so that I do get structured discipline and experience before going for a civillian law enforcement career. Going from retail to be a cop is pretty much a quantum leap. :P
