Personally, I think It's noisy, meaningless untintelligent bullcrap and an excuse for people to try and look cool.
At one point, it had a meaning. Listen to early punk. It's good ****. Now it's hip which makes it not punk. Also, you misspelling unintelligent is ironic and funny to me. /Nitpicking punk rock fan //Who would've thought?Personally, I think It's noisy, meaningless untintelligent bullcrap and an excuse for people to try and look cool.

Like any form of music I like some bands - in this case bands like X, The Ramones, The Clash, Dead Kennedys, The Vandals and later stuff like Wire - and others...not so much.

Didn't you say that you wanted to be a music critic once? I don't think that is the right attitude there mate!MistressMinakoI've yet to hear any good punk, so I think I'll keep my attitude the same as it is.

Agreed. 70's, 80's and some 90's punk was a form of anti-establishment expression. That's is pretty much how Punk Rock started. Old school punk rock wasn't too noisey or stupid as modern Punk Bands are. Listen to Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Ramones, and The Clash to get a good feel for it.

daft punk rocks (sometimes) so it must be coolsurrealnumber5:lol: I love you.

And I do know how to spell unintelligent. Just a common typing mistake, y'know?DmadFearmongerI know, man. I 'm just teasing you. And, as a critic, you should know that (to simplify and generalize) punk rock is about rebellion. What do modern punk bands rebel against? Exactly. Nothing. That's why there's no message. But if you can't get a message from older punk bands, then you need to listen harder. Or (more than likely) learn the context of it all. History and whatnot.
You know what, new guy? You're all right in my book. dodgerblue13Thanks :)
You mean like, sum 41? To be honest, anything with guitars and bands who write their own songs have some measure of talent, and its much better than the crap people buy these days!
I abolutely loved listening to punk music with friends from when I was 12-15. Such good times.
Anyway yes punk is meaningless and unintelligent. But so is 90 % of music. I don't see your point really. I mean good god music in general sucks. You very rarely hear songs that acually have meaningful lyrics. Also It's kind of hard to debate this since theres alot of different music you could be talking about as "punk" music.
OP, post some Punk bands that you've heard that made a bad impression on you. I'm pretty sure its some 2000 wannabe screamo punk band because Punk Rock isn't about how much noise or how many band members have mohawks, its about the message that we don't have conform to society's standards... that and stabbing people in bathrooms ("Horror Business" by the Misfits) [QUOTE="dodgerblue13"] You know what, new guy? You're all right in my book. Inz0mbiakThanks :)
Those are the only ones I remember the names of. There are some others crappy bands my friend posts on Facebook sometimes
I stay strictly in that other 10%. Always.I abolutely loved listening to punk music with friends from when I was 12-15. Such good times.

i love me too, as often as possible, company is always welcome;) I would take you up on that offer but right now I am disturbed by your sig. O_O[QUOTE="MistressMinako"] I love you.surrealnumber5
Saying that punk is, on the whole, unintelligent is as off base as saying that classic rock is. There's just as much variation within the genre as there is within any other. Of course something like Blink 182 is stupid. But listen to the Minutemen, the Replacements, Husker Du, the Germs, etc. Unintelligent is probably one of the last words I'd use to describe any of these bands.
As with everything else, 90% of punk music is crap. It's just that there are a lot of gems out there if you look a little deeper.

Punk is my favorite type of music. If you can honestly dismiss the entire genre as unintelligent, meaningless bullcrap then you obviously haven't heard enough of it and it's MANY variations.
My god, it's like a metal hate thread with a slightly different title!Guppy507Porcupine tree= Miles above punk crap. Your sig is wise

Pop punk? Nice to know how much exposure you had... And leave this guy alone, he thinks music has to be highly intelligent and complex to be goodI like punk rock. Rise Against, Green Day, Anti-Flag, Sum 41, Bad Religion, Blink 182, etc, are all bands I listen to quite a bit. Why do people bother making music threads? Musical taste is one of the most subjective things on the planet, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't good.
As opposed to what, exactly? Also...I'm curious what you consider to be "punk"? My original response to seeing the topic title was to quote a Crass song but I felt way too compelled to find out more about the OP...Personally, I think It's noisy, meaningless untintelligent bullcrap and an excuse for people to try and look cool.

Many punk bands had good lyrics with clever social commentary. I love the genre, personally. I find it strange when people say they don't like a whole genre. I've yet to listen to a genre of music in which I can't find at least a few bands or artists I like.RhazaknaThis. I listen to all types of music and don't really dislike any of them... except black metal, like wtf is that? Anyways, people are not always going to like the same type of music. It just disappoints me that OP was exposed to pop-punk kiddies and he thinks that's Punk Rock when in fact its not.
[QUOTE="DmadFearmonger"]Well it definetly improves it by a long shot.[QUOTE="Inz0mbiak"] Pop punk? Nice to know how much exposure you had... And leave this guy alone, he thinks music has to be highly intelligent and complex to be goodchaplainDMK

I consider punk to be all music labled under the genre "punk"
I like bad religion, black flag, ramones, the clash, Husker du, sex pistols (one album)... that's pretty much it.
I think smash by the offspring is decent too, but I'm not sure they would be considered straight up punk.
What sort of stuff are you and your union going to be programming?Grew up with it, love it.

Grew up with it, love it.
edit: I like pop punk aswell.
Btw, anyone like the Descendents?
LieutenantFeist
Love the Descendents. Definetely in my top 10 punk list.
And lol at punk not taking effort and time to produce. Listen to Husker Du, Refused, and Streetlight Manifesto.

I just had a listen to Husker Du and found it simple and boring sounding... Doesn't help proove your point and also puts me off listening to those other 2[QUOTE="joesh89"][QUOTE="DmadFearmonger"]
