1. WALL-E
2. Synecdoche, New York
3. My Winnipeg
4. 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days
5. Milk
6. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
7. Slumdog Millionaire
8. Iron Man
9. Speed Racer
10. Encounters at the End of the World.

Time Magazine

Even if you didn't like The Dark Knight, you have to admit that there is a reason why it is #4 in the IMDB Top 100 with over 300,000 votes, and it has nothing to do with box office numbers. That it just the by product of a good piece of cinema.

And Speed Racer being better than The Dark Knight on the list speaks volumes in itself.

I seriously believe that year end lists like this and the Golden Globes only exist to stroke a lot of pseudo-intellectual egos.

Who really reads time for information on movies & pop culture, anyway? Great film, but if it didn't make *insert magazine/website/critic's list here* top 10 list, there's no sense in getting upset about it.

You hear a lot of words being tossed around referring to movies these days. Words like "epic", "romantic", "hysterical", "tender" etc. But not all of those words actually mean anything. The Dark Knight might be the one movie this year to have been called a "masterpiece", or "a near masterpiece" several times over. Add to that the fact that it is the second best reviewed movie this year according to Rottentomatoes, that it skyrocketed to number one on imdb's top 250 after three days of release, and that pretty much everyone on the face of the planet went to see it, and I can't understand why it's only Heath Ledger who got nominated for a Golden Globe or why it didn't make Time's top 20.

Speed Racer? Seriously? That's pure tripe. Iron Man was good, but hardly transcendent. Frankly, The Dark Knight is the best movie of the year, but none of these magazines or award ceremonies want to give it any more attention because the idea of it actually taking home the Oscar for best picture and Director is just too preposterous. Never mind they'll give it to a **** musical like Chicago, a sci-fi movie like Lord of the Rings, or a hollywood hogwash romance like Titanic, comic books are just too silly to be taken seriously.

I wouldn't trust the IMDB Top 250 if I were you, but they do have a lot of great films on the list. I may be in the minority here, but I wasn't very fond of Wall E.

More like, Oh no! Someone is trying to go against the grain for the pure sake of it (Time Magazine, not you). You don't have to like it, but you can't deny the impact of the movie from the reviews, records and accolades it has accrued.

Either that, or mayber they really DID think that the other movies were actually BETTER.

When a movie is as highly reviewed as TDK, it is in small company. Even if you didn't like it, ignoring its impact is...well.....ignorant. I didn't like Citizen Kane, but I recognize that it is well reviewed, well liked, and a defining point of American cinema,

Aside from the mistakes of Iron Man and Speed Racer on that list, I actually think it is a good list. The ones on there that aren't Iron Man or Speed Racer that I have seen were better than The Dark Knight.

What really annoys me is the overlooking of "Waltz With Bashir" which is a film I think will grow in reputation in future, and "Hunger" although that isn't scheduled for a US release any time soon so it is understandable.

What's worse is I imagine most of the people who are angry about this list probably haven't seen many of the films on this list.

The Dark Knight is a good movie, nobody can doubt that. But it's one of the most overrated movies of all time and Time Magazine has ALL the right to exclude it from their list. A list of top movies like this is graded on the opinion of an editor(or more) not on how popular it is with the public. Look you people voted it to the top 5 of imdb, be happy with that. It has nothing to do with trying to get attention by not conforming, it's just someone's opinion...

LotR is sci fi now? Also, Return Of The King getting it was a big deal, fantasy films are generally treated like comic book films and comedies, in that they're ignored for the best picture award, so it was a very unusual choice, and a similar situation to TDK this year.

Why is it overrated?

It doesn't deserve the credit it's receiving for being "dark" and "brutal", common the movie is PG-13 don't make me laugh. Also, the so called "moral ambiguity" of the film that batman fanboys are claiming...just..isn't THERE imo. Everything is very straightforward and quite frankly childish, so it's funny to me when I hear people praising its complexity. The action is pretty good but I would liked to have seen more. It would be better if they dedicated more screen time to some action sequences instead of pretentious unconvincing dialog scenes.
