I was in my Calculus class today and I heard one guy say, "Yeah, then you times both sides of the equation by 2"

This person has been speaking English his whole life and knows no other language. THE VERB IS MULTIPLY

What are some things that people commonly say that aren't right?

Preposition times 1. (arithmetic) multiplied by. Seven times three is twenty-one.

It's just a shorter, faster way of saying multiply. I don't see the problem with it, even if I don't use it.

Multiply is too long. Times owns multiply.

I suppose some verbs that technically don't make sense are those which are made from nouns. Such as "I'm buttering some toast." Makes sense, but does it really?

People have been saying "times" instead of "multiply" for ages. I've never found it to be offensive.

I see nothing wrong saying times instead of multiply. I do it on many occassions, as well as many other people I know.

It bothers me in the context you list - I just use it when it comes between two parts of an equation, like 'two times three' or whatever.

It does sound odd when used in some cases but yeah, it's been used for a while now.

Saying 9 times 9 = 81 makes people sound dumb? How would you say it professor?

Eh... it's no big deal. Times is one syllable, multiply is three, but I doubt a math teacher is going to dock you points for incorrect grammar. Now what bothers me is when people keep misusing "its" and "it's". "Its time to go." Uh, whom does this 'time to go' belong to? "The cat hurt it's tail." The cat hurt it is tail? :?

When you're saying it as part of the equation, it is correct, but when you're using it as a verb, such as what the OP said, "Yeah, then you times both sides of the equation by 2", it is incorrect. The correct verb is multiply. I wouldn't go so far as to say it sounds dumb, just incorrect to me.

Lucas further explained what I said. I have no problem with it being said in part of the equation, but when people say "you times it by 3" or something. That, in my opinion, makes people sound kind of dumb.

I usually use 'times' in the equation form. However, when I am focusing on something, or thinking about the math involved, it usually comes out to 'times' something, because I'm thinking of 'a' times 'b'. It's not so much intentional as just not changing the words that were in my thoughts when they were shifted around.

"Times" is a legitimate verb when it replaces "multiply". Many text books use it.

I tend to agree with this statement. In most cases you will have to accompany "multiply", or "multiplied" rather, with by after. Takes longer rather than just getting to the damn question. But when you make a statement including "times by", it does sound a little out of place. Anyway the worst is hearing people say "timesed by".

Fair enough. I was reading your post as blanket statement, but this clarifies it. Thanks professor.

I think "times" is a short way of expressing i.e., x times of y, or x amount of y.

If you're beyond second grade, 'times' is not a verb.

Cripes. How much harder is it to just say the right thing?

I'm baffled to see so many people admitting to saying it that way.

Oh my gosh, I hate it when people say, "plus 4 to 5 to make 9" instead of using "add." Minus annoys me also. Times annoys me to a lesser extent, but people need to stop being lazy and sound out the extra 1 syllable. Seriously.

When did anything become a verb, noun, adjective, or any other part of the english language? New words will appear, meanings will change, and language will adapt. Else we'd still be speaking old english ;) Personally, I hate it when people say pacific, instead of specific. Maybe it's just local though.

I have a degree in mathematics and I say "times" all the time... That is a perfectly acceptable way to express multiplication, 3 x 2 = 6 "three times two equals 6"

Whats the problem here? Saying "times" instead of "multiply" is easier, faster, and more convenient.

Again, I don't believe 'times' instead of 'multiply' is cause for a thread starter. Nothing wrong with it.

I agree with TC, "times" is not a verb. To those saying it's no big deal and we say "two times three equals six" all the time, well that's not using it as a verb, and you've missed the point of the topic.
