I am soon to turn 17 (Not too soon but soon enough to call it soon) and was just wondering when did you guys get your first car. And how did you guys get it, did you ask your parents, did you pay with it with your own money? And what was it?

As of now I have no car but I am hoping to go 50/50 with my parents later this year. But I share a '99 Mustang with my brother.

EDIT: And how much did you pay for it? -=D

1989 Geo Prizm. Maybe the worst car ever made. Just maybe. EDIT: I was 17, and paid around $300 for that beast.

I was 15 and bought an 89 Suzuki Sidekick. It was a fun vehicle, but I sold it a year and a half later because I was doing a lot of highway driving.

I've never had a car to call my own. My parents refuse to pay, or help pay, the outrageous cost of insurance. I am currently saving to buy my first car and on track for March of next year. I can't wait.

I had an old Merc that was older than me handed down to me from my dad. The thing sometimes wouldn't start, sometimes would stop at traffic lights and in the middle of the road, the brakes were so bad I had to brake so early that it usually ticked off anyone behind me (and the line that was forming behind them. Nightmare in peak hour...) and occasionally, the car would spontaneously lose a part. Like, it'd literally drop something randomly.

I used to refer to it as a bucket on wheels. It was about as reliable and as safe as one.

Good times.

I've upgraded since, naturally. But I guess having the old thing did give me the safety lessons in driving the hard way...

How?

My parents refuse to pay for or even fund me getting a car, they told me if they did I would be spoiled.
They're also making me pay for my share of the insurance on the car we own. :(

I got my first car at age 16. My parents bought me a 1996 Saturn SL2 for $3000. It's 2 years later, we've replaced the brakes, front axel, air conditioning, the radiator, and the paint is chipping off the spoiler.

small world... I was fifteen, my parents also bought me a 1988 olds, it was a cutlass supreme classic with 100K+ on it. 0-60 in about 12 minutes... and this was with it's V8 engine, LOL -- Something was definitely wrong with it, but it worked and that's all that mattered...
