When do you get definition in muscle?

Over the past 3 weeks having nothing to do in the summer i do several hundred bicpet curls over 30 minutes every day with 10 pound weights. When will the effort i put in carve out muscle? Btw i have high metabolism which keeps me skinny but a high tolerance for weight lifting.

You can't just do bicep curls and expect to get stronger..Maybe a little definition in your biceps, but thats about it. Besides..If you're trying to make your arms bigger, you can't forget about the triceps and shoulders.

Find some other workouts to do at home.

You could slowly increase the weights and see if that does anything. rawsavon would probably have a better answer.

Well first off the only way to get defined muscles is to lost body fat through diet and exercise. Weight training will make them bigger and stronger, and you need to rest at least a day between workouts. The longer you lift, the more rest you need. You can expect to put on 5-10 pounds of muscle a year if you lift week after week with good nutrition.

Do more than just biceps (like the other guy mentioned, triceps are important as antagonizing muscle groups should be worked as well). And increase weights, if you can do several hundred bicep curls, you can stand to up the weight a bit and do less reps.

Indeed. Its worth knowing that the tricep muscle is bigger than the bicep.

High tolerance with 10 lbs? ....

Anyway, my definition started coming out when I practiced martial arts for 8 hours or so every day for 6 months. I just kept working towards making endorphins.

Add more weight dude. 10 lbs bicep curls for 3 weeks is getting you nowhere. You might have little definition but it actually takes muscle mass to begin with to have definition - and that is achievable by adding more weight. Try incorporating more protein into your diet too (milk, meat, eggs) because that will help with muscle building and definition.

Also - try other weight lifting exercises like bench press, tricep press/extension, and also shoulder exercises. Improving muscles around your bicep will help with overall definition you are trying to achieve.

Do cardio (HIIT preferably) Increase the weights and do a full body or split training. Just training your biceps with low weights and doing hundreds or reps will not cut it. Eat lots of food (lean protein(meat,eggs,skimmed milk) + Carbohydrates + Veggies(for fiber) + Essential fats) .(Not McD's) Be consistent and stay focused Enjoy.

Whaaat? You should get tired after 10-15 curls at a time. If you can do several hundred, you must be lifting a feather - that's not going to build muscle as fast. If the muscles (but not the joints) hurt the next day, you're doing it right. So yeah, get some good dumbbells, then do a bunch of exercises with those and with your body weight (pushups with elevated feet).

Just lifting weights won't give you muscle definition. Losing body fat is what makes your muscles show, regardless of how big they are. You will look ripped if your body fat % is below 10% even if you're a wimp, and you will have very little muscle definition if your body fat is over 20% even with huge muscles. So go get on a good diet... at about 10% body fat is the magic number, at that point you get to see your whole six-pack.

Also, doing curls with light weights is a terrible way to exercise. Curls are horrible exercises for newbie weight lifters, the reason you see pros doing them is because their muscles are so tough even after a whole workout with deadlifts, barbell rows and pull-ups their biceps aren't beat out yet, and then they use huge weights not 10-pounders. If you're serious about putting on some muscle mass and strenght check out the Starting Strenght lifting program, that's awesome for beginners. For a good diet program to lean down, check out Lean Gains, I'm on it right now, it's going fantastic, much better than any other I've tried before.

Why are curls horrible exercises? Everyone loves having large biceps, and curls are a necessity - how else are you going to get your biceps?

It's not about doing more reps than everyone else. It's about gradually increasing the amount of weight you lift over time to build muscle. For example, if you can do "several hundred bicept curls", and you're trying to gain big muscles, you're doing it wrong. You need to up the amount of weights you lift by a ridiculous amount. I think body builders use weights they can lift like only about 10 times per set. And that's to gain big muscle, along with eating alot. Then they "cut", which gives them greater muscle definition.

When you have a low enough body fat percentage. Which means you should either lose weight, gain muscle, or preferably, both.

Probably doing hundreds of light weight curls is not the best way to go about it. Better than nothing, but heavier weights and less repetitions is better. Low reps for strength, medium reps (8-12) for size and 12-20 for endurance.
