It really depends where you go, i doubt it will ever be ok in the mainstream public but in some places jokes appeared as soon as the first images appeared.
Well it is the poorest country in the world, then got struck by an earthquake... Now a bunch of people/celebs think they are doing "gods work" to save them. I see some good material there.

Thats just from the point of view now. I mean after 9/11 people were thinking there was no way they could joke about it. Now you see them quite often. Its almost unthinkable that there could have ever been jokes about the holocaust but there are. Its just gonna be some time before people are ready.

never openly, but between friends no topic should be taboo as long as it doesnt offend someone personally - (personally is defined as actually bieng in it, or having a family member die)

I can't think of any reason why I'd tell a joke about the tragedy that has fallen upon Haiti.. or why anyone else would be interested in doing such a thing.. Because people see comedy in tragedy sometimes. Especially comedians.
I know the day after the earthquake people were cracking jokes in forums I was reading such as the WoW general forum. Not exactly the pinnacle of intelligent conversation but still. Mostly jokes about how the Cataclysm(the next expansion featuring earthquakes) had hit Haiti first before anywhere else. Personally I feel that there is no tragedy that you can not make fun of with a good joke. I'm pretty heartless though.

Is the only place you know to tell jokes on the internet? You don't have friends to tell them to in real life? You can't decide if you want to make Haiti jokes on your own, you have to depend on other's opinions? So many questions but I am getting the impression that you can answer none of them without asking OT first what they think.
Obviously ---^ Why would I be afraid to tell Haiti jokes to my RL friends? I posted to see what the general consensus was basically.

On OT you'll probably find more people against them than people for. Definetly. Fry do an experiment. Change your topic title to your actual question. Something like Is it ok to make Haiti jokes. Make sure Haiti is in the title. Watch this topic get swarmed by people getting angry =p
OK, OP, I will sacrifice my precious Gamespot level with this social experiment: I don't blame the Haitians, after 10 aftershocks I can't find my house either.
The entire thing is a joke. Everyone ignores the world's poorest country, but when a natural disaster strikes and wreaks havoc on the destitute people, people are rushing to aid the victims. Public diplomacy FTW/L.
