Sabbath was the first, but I would say overall Maiden and Priest have had more widespread influence.
Black Sabbath is the ONLY answer to this question. Anyone who says anything else is just showing their complete lack of knowledge of the subject.
Probably Black Sabbath, and then Slayer.avatar_geniusI don't know if you're serious on the latter :|
Led Zepplin was the father of metal. The sound of more modern metal bands may be different, but Zepplin paved the way.
Black Sabbath and Deep Purple were equally important. The power cord was more or less invented by Black Sabbath due to an injury suffered by Tony Iommi.

What does that have to do with what you said?[QUOTE="avatar_genius"][QUOTE="cyberdarkkid"] Yes but that doesn't mean they have influenced metal the most :| cyberdarkkid
You can't give one band all the credit.
What does that have to do with what you said?Musical influence is an accumulation of bits of many many things, so it's kind of useless to give one thing so much credit, because even if a tiny piece of the puzzle was missing, even if it was "insignificant," it still wouldn't be the same picture.
And besides, originally, I said Black Sabbath and Slayer, which I'm pretty sure is true.

I think most people mention Black Sabbath, because they sort of invented the genre. Thats considered more important than just influencing the course of the genre.[QUOTE="avatar_genius"]

Exactly everybody knows that there are various things that influence a genre and that one band can't take full credit but this question is asking for the band that influenced it the MOST. And what he posted was irrelevant to him saying Slayer.Iron Maiden has influenced many including myself, don't get me wrongbut why is Metallica not listed?
Yup. Zeppelin was a hard rock band anyway. They popularized certain solo techniques, and that's about it. Priest and Maiden were both influential, in fact in the long run Maiden has been just about as influential as Sabbath (as in the number of bands inspired by them), but Sabbath came first and were immensely influential so it has to be them.Black Sabbath is the ONLY answer to this question. Metallica is also the biggest influence of heavy metal.
Metallica wasn't very influential on metal. They were however influential on the grunge scene of the early '90s (and then Metallica changed their styIe). For thrash, most bands were influenced by the likes of Megadeth, Slayer, or the German Speed Metal scene (Destruction, Kreator, Sodom, etc.). Metallica was too slow, and speed is the embodiment of thrash, and plus Metallica wasn't very technical to begin with and at the time technicality mattered in Thrash and Death scenes. Grind and Black were another story and neither was very influenced by Metallica. I would argue as to why Venom or Bathory isn't listed instead of Led Zeppelin.Iron Maiden has influenced many including myself, don't get me wrongbut why is Metallica not listed?

James Hetfield would probably be the only influential person in Metallica. He was one of the first pioneers of thrash metal along with Dave Mustaine.Iron Maiden has influenced many including myself, don't get me wrongbut why is Metallica not listed?

I'm split between Death and Morbid Angel deserving that nomination. Death was more influential in the US (their first few albums up through Human at least), but Morbid Angel was far more influential for European metal (as can be said by the numerous interviews with bands in the early extreme metal scenes). Europe seems to have more metal bands per capita than any other landmass, so I'd probably give the nod to Morbid Angel.Iron Maiden has influenced many including myself, don't get me wrongbut why is Metallica not listed?
