I'm 21 years old and I'm graduating with my B.S degree this summer. I do not have much loans to repay and no expensive bills to pay. I do not have a good job yet, just a small part time job at the cafe that i'm about to quit. My mother is giving me $30,000 to purchase a car. I have a 2004 honda civic EX automatic right now that i can sell for $7500. I want the new 5.0 mustang GT stick, however, that'll cost me exactly $35,000. I was also thinking about just buying the redesigned 2012 civic SI stick for $22,000 and pocket the rest of the money. Obviously the mustang GT is better, faster, and handles alot better than the civic SI. It's also about 10,000 dollars more. I want to buy new. What would you recommend thanks in advance for any suggestions.

What about your insurance. I'm guessing a 5ltr mustang will be expensive for a 21 year old.

I would go with the mustang, but thats just because I prefer muscle cars. Also the civic is way better on gas than the mustang so you might want to consider that.

The new engines in the Mustangs are actually pretty good on gas. 19/31 mpg for the V6 (dunno why the f*** you'd get one of those, though) and 18/26 mpg for the V8. Civic's still better on gas, but not by some huge amount. Plus it's a Civic.... who wants to drive a Civic?

You could settle for something in between and get a Hyundai Genesis Coupe or something similar.

Coming right out of college with loans, I would opt for a civic. (much to my chagrin)

Mustangs are awesome, however you might regret that decision when you are slightly older, and have a career. Im not knocking mustangs, I love them, owned one when I was 18 (4.6L GT), but after a while it just felt like it was too common, especially with kids in their teens. If I were in your position, and about to embark on a career, I would look into an S4 audi or M3 BMW. For your budget you would probably get a lightly used one but they are such beautiful, fast, and established vehicles. If sporty is your thing, consider 370Z or G37 infiniti? --Whatever you decide to do, its important to understand that you must buy what you want. A car defines can define you. You must balance taste with luxury, sportiness, etc. Also keep in mind to keep a few G's on the side for modifications (wheels, tints etc) because these things grow on you like a disease once you start noticing all the mods that are available, especially in a mustang! Good luck and have fun!

You could also go for a well equipped GTI or Genesis Coupe, a moderately equipped 370Z, or a used BMW or Mercedes.

You could stick with Honda, or even go for a Nissa Maxima or 370z. Heck, you might be able to get an Audi A3 or A4.

The newest mustang is nice. I like it.. but it guzzles gas like no tomorrow. And you know gas prices these days.. at least here in Southern California. I drive a 2009, 2-Door Accord black color, and I love it. It really suits me. Cost me $24k after I pestered the salesman to death. I think $35k is a bit too much for a Mustang. It's an American car. It won't last long, and parts will be hard to find to fix unless you buy parts brand new.. which will cost you a pretty penny. Going Japanese would be smart. At $35k, you might as well get the base priced Lexus IS 250. Drives like a dream. But you're 21, but you're only getting older. Gotta think smart.

I think the Civic SI would be your best bet. Great on gas, about 35 mpg or more. It drives real nice. It's a really nice practical car that looks very modern. The Civic has come a long way. Avoid any used European cars... because you will be fixing that thing soon, I promise you and European car maintenance costs a fortune.

Yes, your parents might be giving you the money to spend, but you need to pocket some of that money or give it back to them. That's between you and your parents. You don't have a career yet so I wouldn't go spending money like that. You'll get bored of the mustang quick and you'll find that having a good-paying job and a house are much more important. Keep the money to put a down payment on the house later once your career takes off and you're doing well. But this isn't sound advice is it. Go party it up and spend it all on girls? :P ;)

Other recommendations: Mazda 3 (newest model), Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai Genesis 2.0 (2 door). They don't cost a fortune and they're beautiful cars, I promise you.

I would keep the Honda and put the 30k into savings. The job market is a disaster. It could be a long time before you find a good job.

Look I dont want to get in your family business, but dude find a decent job first, and me personally I never let my parents buy me anything I guess its just part of my nature. But even if you do except such a gift, be greatfull to your parents and get your self a 15k car. No need to get such a expensive car from 15-20k you can chose plenty of brand names and great cars, and take my advice never buy a brand new car, always look for a 1-2 year olds with some miles, you will save a lot of money but make sure you check it out real good, thats my take.

Didn't like Ford file bankruptcy a few years ago? Their engineering might be better though. You could be right. If so, I still think $35k is a bit steep for a 20 yr old. I'm not saying that's what he should do. Just my opinion.

I bought my Altima 2009 last year for 16000 cash fully loaded with technology package and its 3.5SE, very beatiful car didnt cost me a arm and a leg and it can keep up with most sports cars. If I had to spend 30-35k on a car I would recommend you get yourself a 370z if you are into sports cars.

So I'm a little bias against American cars. I don't even know my facts. But yeah, like I said, 35k is steep for someone who won't have a job soon, with no career yet. He will do well once things are up and running but right now.. it isn't the brightest of ideas. If I didn't have a good job, I wouldn't buy a car even if someone gave me the money. I would save it, or at least buy a car that's really affordable, under 20k. For now, he just needs to get from point A to point B, which the car that he owns now does too btw.

You're being given $30,000 to buy a car............ That's......insane. Welp, I'm sure you could haggle a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo (GSR) build with some accessories down to $35000 flat.

Or you could, you know, be smart and reasonable and get something reliable and used for cheap. Your parents shouldn't give you that kind of coin for a car.

There is nothing wrong with the car you currently have. You could drive the civic for another 5-10 years easily........ I would suggest using the money to save for a down payment on a house personally.

Chrysler 300 C Hemi.

You get muscle car performance (1 HP per cubic inch), loads of torque, plus computerized fuel efficiency at highway cruise.

Not to mention the insurance is loads cheaper than a Mustang.

drive your existing car into the ground and do something wise with your money- invest it or put it into a down payment on a home.

I would actually recommend waiting until you get a decent job. I would also recommend buying a car that's a year or two old with low miles. You'll save thousands, and you'll get a car that's still like new. Cars are not an investment, and shouldn't be bought new. As soon as you sign your name to it, it loses about $2000 in value. So, again I suggest you search for a used one that's still in great condition.
