Which ones would you say are more damaging? I usually use in ear ones but they keep on breaking after a few weeks so Im thinking of getting some headphones. also which out of the two generally provide the best sound quality and background noise isolation? cheers

different brand different models, quality varies, i personally like sony and panasonic, i really don't like the ones you put inside the ears because they hurt the gristle after a while.

the ear buds are more likely to. the reason behind this is that the vibrations are a LOT closer to your eardrums. too much volume from either is too much volume, its actually an interesting phenomenon and would require some studying of sound to understand how the waves travel. btw, your ears are more susceptible to damage from higher frequencies than lower frequencies but earbuds can't generally push those lower frequencies.

Depends on how loud you have it, but assuming the same volume level, probly the in-ear ones because they are so close to your inner ear.

Earbuds & Canalphones.

Full-sized & supra-aural headphones are a bit harder to carry around, but I much prefer them..with that being one of the reasons.

Well I'm guessing earphones since they sit in your ears. But headphones are so quiet I have to turn the volume above normal. So it's pretty much doing the same damage :l

Both damage if too loud. None will damage at safe listening levels. Full-size headphones have better sound quality when compared to in-ear monitors of the same price. Full sized open back headphones generally sound better than closed back full sized headphones in the same price range, but have poor isolation. Avoid earbuds, bad sound quality and they isolate poorly and as a result people ten to pump up the volume to drown out the ambient noise. That leaves you with closed back full size headphones and in-ear monitors for good sound quality and isolation. Of course the monitors will be more portable.

Open headphones or earbuds would be the worst, since you have to crank the volume to compensate for the lack of sound isolation. Canalphones are better, as you don't need them as loud. Naturally, due to their proximity to your eardrums you don't want to turn them too loud, but a good pair of those are generally going to do less damage than something that sucks in outside noises like the crappy pack-in ipod earbuds. Similarly, open-ear headphones are meant for personal listening at home or for when you need to hear other noises like while running. In order to drown out anything else they have to be louder, which is bad for your ears.

Seriously?! When I used to buy cheaper headphones (5-15 quid) they wore out in one ear within 4/5 months. Sometimes faster. I got an iPod last year and the headphones that came with it have lasted over a year and that's only cause I stood on them. However my bf's pair only lasted 7 months so now I've replaced them I bought extra cover on them.

I would imagine that a good pair of IEMs would damage your hearing least since it provides enough isolation that you can probably get by with 1/3 or 1/2 the volume necessary to completely drown out ambient noise.

Neither do more damage than the other. It all depends on how loud you have it. 100 decibels is 100 decibels. Being 2 cm further away doesn't matter

I think it does not make too much of a difference. Just depends on how loud you have them.

Get some Koss Plug earphones, their design is based on that of earplugs (with the foam stuff) so they isolate sound really well, so you don't need much volume to be able to hear your music, which is better for your hearing. They're cheap as well (10GBP)

Think of standing next to a jet engine, that'll be pretty loud right? Now move 2cm away. I don't think it makes much of a difference.

I'd guess it wouldn't make a difference. If the sound is loud enough to cause hearing damage, it'll cause it whether or not you use earbuds or headphones.

With that said, earphones usually do a better job at maximizing the amount of sound coming out of a player, so they theoretically have potential to cause more damage.

Just don't put the volume up too high and you'll be fine.

They also isolate well and thus you don't need to crank up the volume to drown out ambient noise, so its a moot point.

That is irrelevant, really. It's only the dB and the sound frequency that matter. The isolation the provide means you can listen to music at a lower volume, and thus reducing the risk of damage.

I used to have the same problem with my buds, hurting my ears after like 1/2 hour and falling out constantly. I stumbled across this strange little product called Breppies, which are basically like little tiny socks that go over the entire bud. They really work awesome. I think they were free on the website, Breppies dot com, but they still charged $1.95 S&H. My ears never hurt even when I wear my buds for several hours and they never fall out....pretty cool for something so simple.

Irrelevant. It's the loudness that matters, not the proximity to your hear. If anything, earphones (in-ear) would be less damaing in a real-world setting, since they isolate quite well and one wouldn't need to turn the volume up so much to drown out ambient noise as one does with non-isolating over/around the ear headphones.
