Define popular. Popular in real life is different than popular on the internet. If you mean stuff they play on the radio, no, I don't listen to any of that.

Sadly, a surprising amount of people don't know any of those bands. I listen to a lot of stuff that most people in my school have never heard of (GY!BE, Russian Circles, Agalloch), and I listen to a lot of music that some people have heard of (In Flames, Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity), and then I listen to music that most people that know metal know about (Iron Maiden, Metallica, Tool, Slayer). I wouldn't call any of it mainstream though

I don't think that you can accurately say that the listed music is pretentious. Unless you're speaking about the TC, in which you'd still be incorrectly using the word.
