Both have it in the music (of course not all the bands in either genre; probably less than half easily). Black is built around it though, but has since moved away and seems to focus more on neo-paganism/heathenism than anything now. The older bands and revival artists tend to go back to the traditional "satanic" stuff.
Black, but most of the "satanism" is LaVeyan atheistic satanism.MrPralineYeah, Most of the artists think Satan's literal existence to be a joke. The only notable person in either genre who actually believed in "Satan" that I know of was Euronymous. Erik from Watain is another, but he says he does for image rather than actual belief. He's a poseur of the first class.

I would assume so, considering it's kinda impossible for people to accept Satans existence if they don't accept the existence of God. Btw, why is Death Metal christened so? The lyrics don't really have anything to do with death as one would assume...
:O I love Ensiferum!. ONCE THERE WAS A BOY, BACK IN TIME OF THE HEATHENS... lol. th3warr1or
Excellent. Ensiferum is great. You might also like Korpiklaani.
Check out Enslaved. They're a nordic "Viking"/Progressive Black Metal band. They have clean vocals and harsh vocals and a very distinct, wintery sound that doesn't mar the production like it does for other bands (which is a good thing for some artists, but for Enslaved it wouldn't fit). Other folk metal bands you can check out: Ulver, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Eluveitie, Vintersorg, and Borknagar.Saturos3091
Good post. I also recommend Moonsorrow. Pagan themed lyrics, epic songs. Melodic black band.

The lyrics don't really have anything to do with death as one would assume... Well, it depends. A lot of them do. Slam Death, Brutal Death, straight up Death Metal, all of them have their fair share of violent, gory, death-oriented lyrics (if not, then it's usually some sort of strange H.P. Lovecraft inspired adventure or taking slights against religion). Progressive Death Metal even has some death-oriented lyrics (Opeth has a few good tracks dealing with the subject, and the concept of several albums revolves around death or has death as a plot device). Death/Doom follows the same pattern. Melodic Death metal is the exception since it's lyrics are more "commercial" which is why a lot of people don't like the genre, and it often shares a lot of pagan/heathenism views with other Folk and Black metal bands.
Anyone here listen to Folk Metal bands then? I'm somewhat obsessed with Norse Mythology(loved it since I was a kid, which is weird, because I'm Christian, but hell, who cares what other people think, it's not like I follow that religion) but I like songs where I can catch the lyrics and actually sing along after listening to them once or twice(I can do that with Holmgard and Beyond, Little Dreamer, Warrior's Quest, [and everyone is going to hate me for this but] DragonForce). th3warr1orTry Elvenking. Not explicity about Norse mythology, but it has pagan themes. TÝR is mandatory too.
Anything that maintains the nordic theme with completely clean vocals ala Turisas?(Ensiferum's Little Dreamer, I can catch it, but that's because I just love the catchy tune which is basically the same over and over). th3warr1orI don't know of any really. I'd check out Equilibrium as well (very catchy too) and Moonsorrow (credit to MrPraline), It's not my area of expertise though so there's probably some out there.

Absolutely check out Equilibrium. :>
I found out about Tyr when I was checking out all the NapalmRecords bands after listening to Alestorm. th3warr1orMore folk/pagan: Heidevolk, Strydegor, Heidevolk is a pretty obscure Dutch band, but I love them. Wodan is the old Dutch word for Odin, by the way. Strydegor is relatively new, but I enjoyed their first album. I might be able to think of more later, but I'm kind of tired at the moment. :P

Wtf Slayer is considered black? th3warr1orNah, thrash. But I don't think Espada12 meant to imply that they are.
