I'm going to avoid doing who is the best guitarist topic and instead ask which type of guitarist do you like listening to best. I mean there will always be people who will say metal guitarists are the best while some would disgree and say blues and flamenco guitiarists are much better. I don't think there's really any wrong answer since each type brings their own set of skills to the art.

I also think this would be a good way for fans of the music to share some names that others may not have heard of or are just not knowledgable of. Try and find a sample of their work on youtube so people can at least listen to why you think they're good enough to share with others.

For me I like blues and blues rock guitarists best. Speed has never been their aim and instead going for some simple but powerful melodies and rhythms. Some of my favorite blues and blues rock guitarists are below.

Duane Allman

Whipping Post

Melissa

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Texas Flood

Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)

Pride and Joy (Live from Montreux '82)

Albert Collins

Frosty (Live from Montreux 1992)

Ice Pick

Brick

i think every type of guitarist has their charm. metal is my favorite type of music so i obviously like metal guitarists, but i also like virtuoso type ( satriani / vai) jazz guitar, flamenco, classical, blues.. you name it.. as long as it has class and feeling i'll probly like it. i have actually gotten into jazz fusion quite a bit recently.

ok first vid, this is O.H.M. Chris poland's jazz fusion band .. yes the chris poland of megadeth. playing very different stuff right now, its funny to imagine the guy in the vid is the guy who played on good morning black friday, but yes, he's making equally amazing music now IMO, his solo album is also very good, and is more of what was on megadeth

I'm the same. Django Reinhardt one of my favorite jazz guitarists. Flamenco guitarists I've really begun to really enjoy. Vicente Gomez can do stuff with an acoustic guitar that's just crazy.

I'm more into rhythm than solo guitar. A great solo can't save a bad/boring song. I've even sometimes skipped solos just to get back to the crushing verse etc. Necrophagist has some awesome solos though :)

Victor Wooten demostrates unbeleiveable diversity even if its Bass guitar, especially in this.

This diversity in styes grouped into one song is to me what demostrates overall skill and talent.

I also really admire Billy Corgan.

you definately wont be dissapointed, i personally think the live echoes is substantially better than the studio, it feels more alive and upbeat. i think gilmours solo is different as well, and its more extreme. here is the track list incase you wanted to know . 1. intro 2. echoes part 1 3. careful with that axe eugene 4. a saucerful of secrets 5. one of these days 6. set the controls for heart of the sun 7. mademoiselle nobs 8. echoes part 2

I can't say I got a particular favourite based on style, everyone has got their skills and dont just play one definitive sound. Take Chris Broderick for example, he can play Jazz, Prog, Classical, Metal (of course), etc etc. Alex Lifeson is similar, he has many different skills and styles when appropriate.

This is exactly what I wanted. Now I got names of people to check out. For those who haven't had the pleasure of listening and watching a classical, flamenco and jazz guitarist at their best should check this out.

Vicente Gomez - Flamenco

Paco De Lucia - Flamenco

Django Reinhardt - Jazz

Andres Segovia - Classical

I'd only want him to not rejoin because Chris is my favourite :P But he is definately a talented guitarist. I wonder if there is any stuff of him and Gar before Megadeth because Gar (I'd say Megadeths best drummer in terms of skill) also had the Jazz background. Sure, he might've been responsible for them being Heroin addicts, but mein gott he was good. Great music too ;)

Segovia is the true guitar god if one really had to anoint any player as one. I've not heard of any musician, whether they were blues, country, metal, jazz and many others who were not amazed at Segovia's playing.

chris poland and gar both came from the same jazz band, which the name of can be found on wikipedia, i have tried to find an album of them to no avail. i think they only had demo's / lives.. i should put a huge bountry up on what for them. its probly rly good considering the two of them. and TBH i can now tell why marty friedman said megadeth was never heavy enough.. chris gets to express himself much more in the jazz bands and marty gets to go all over the place solo.. song structures rly limit guitar players, no wonder satriani and vai never had singers.. its just impossible to play really amazing stuff while maintaining song structure with a song with lyrics or the such.

also if heroine led to songs like loved to deth, black friday, my last words and wake up dead, id sneak into mustaine's house tonight and shoot him up with some smack. freak i jst recently listened to the demo's on the remastered countdown album, and WOW their soo much bttr than the orig's .. theyre heavier .. the psychotron demo blew me away, i nvr liked it orignalally but the demo is boss. the countdown demo has more emphasised guitar and the symphony demo is just overall better, its longer and the bass is much more defined.

Blues or blues-influenced guitarists mostly, but I am partial to flamenco and metal. Jimi Hendrix is definitely my favourite guitarist. He is far from overrrated.

Only a few people have been posting in here, oddly. :(

Um, Dominic Cifarelli, James Black, Koichi Fukuda, Wayne Static (?), Dave Mustaine, Roy Orbison (just kidding  ). And you don't need to know who those guys are, are a member of, or what they sound like.

This is essentially true for me, but I also like guitarists who can evoke a mood without drowning out the other instruments.
