Lets say the earth began getting closer and closer to the sun every day, and each day it got warmer and warmer. It eventually passes 110 degrees and it will only continue to increase and increase more as the earth gets closer to the sun.

There is no more darkness, even at midnight the sun is shining bright as ever. Eventually electronics start shorting out due to the immense heat, cars overheat more frequently, and it wont end it will only increase.Water is scarce and is only being turned on for an hour a day

It will eventually get the point where simply touching your windowsill will burn your hand. Or would you rather it get further away from the sun? where the sun never rises anymore and its always dark outside, its freezing cold and -10 degrees with it only decreasing more and more.

Which would be more unbearable?

I'd prefer the cold, since 110F is absolutely unbearable to me, but -10F is just fine. But why would either scenario entail permanent sunlight or darkness...?

The cold. Because then we could live underground and live off the heat that the core gives off.

ways to think of it

You can put on more clothes to get warm but not take off clothes to get cool

You can also redirect the heat to somewhere else(air conditioning anybody) but you can't make heat out of nothing

We have an earth that gives off heat

We can basically make electricity if it's so hot so it's actually better

well based on the fact taht when you're going to die from freezing i hear you get really warm and just fall asleep. that's better than losing control of your body due to dehyrdation.

I'm not bothered. I live in the UK so the climate is average. It's usally cold in the winter and mild/warm in the summer. It never gets too hot or too cold.

I prefer heat over cold, however the temperature dropping every day would lead to less problems than rising everyday IMO

Colder for me, I absolutely love cold weather, nothing beats taking a nice hot shower on a cold night, only to climb into a cold bed and letting your body heat warm it up. The only downside is the mornings, nothing worse than stepping out of your warm home into freezing weather.

This seems wrong. I'm basing this off the earth's relationship with the moon. Eventually, the moon is supposed to remain on one side of the earth. I forget, but it should be because the distance is increasing.

It's a tough choice either way. If it's too cold machines have hard times running. Not to mention the mountains of snow that would cover the planet. Water would freeze. lots of animals would freeze without anywhere warm to hide.

If it's hot. Dehydration, engines overheating. Water will have to be rationed. Plantlife would die due to lack of rain. Though you WILL be able to fry up an egg on the sidewalk!

For the sake of answering, though, I'll choose cold. It's easier to warm up than cool down.

Oh colder by far for me. I cant stand hot temperatures and by hot temps I'm talking like 90-100 F. and to some people that's not even hot. So you can see how much I cant stand the heat, it gives me headaches and drains my energy for some reason. lol its almost like superman who gains energy from the sun, but opposite, I gain energy from lack of heat i guess you can say. I think cause my ancestors were Norsemen who lived in cold climates so it runs in my DNA i dont know :\

Colder would be better, heat would destroy all the human race has done. Cold would freeze everything and one day an intellegent race may discover us and have something to dig up.

Heat would be worse. If it gets colder we'll just put on more clothes. Plus I don't want to sweat like crazy every single second because of the heat.

I'd choose getting colder cause if we were getting closer to the sun we would eventually be consumed by it. However each scenario would have dire affects on our atmosphere, water supply, and food production, as well as man made machine, although again I think continual colding (I just made a new word) would be more survivable to humanity. P.S. Since our earth is round how could all of it get sun all the time. Or all of it get no sun, unless we leave its orbital reach.

Hot temperatures cause a lot of problems, aside from the obvious discomfort, crops would be unable to grow and the water levels will most likely lower (assuming the polar ice caps dont' melt and flood everywhere) resulting in a decerase in water supply and energy for areas that rely on hydroelectricity.

On the otherhand a cold temperature causes similar problems as hot temperature, but at least we can plant crops in greenhouses and the ice can be melted for water.

So yes I'd prefer cold to hot.

It would be much better if the temperature increased every day because heat is energy. Once the heat became unbearable for humans we could cover the earth with devices that harness the ambient heat and use that energy to cool to inhabited sections of the earth. energy is better than no energy fools!

You do realize that gamma rays would kill us all way before it got that hot out there, right? And I'd choose the latter, moving away from the sun. As long as I have efficient knowledge of physics in order to either 'borrow' sun's heat or lock myself from the increasing cold, I shouldn't have a problem.

Increasing, it's easy to get warm when its cold, it's quite hard to get cool when outside, example:

Really cold: I'm running around like mad man, and I'm hot and sweaty. :P

Really hot: I'm standing in the shade, and I'm hot and sweaty, I'm running like a mad man, and I'm hot and sweaty, there is no solution other than to stand near a cooler for an hour.

Great topic, TC
