Story.

According to the story, if an illegal immigrant is arrested for a reason unrelated to being undocumented the Federal Government won't request custody of the person to start deportation procedings against them unless they are convicted of the original crime they was arrested for. If they're acquitted of the crime they are arrested for they are released without being turned over to immigration officials.

This is based on a memo released on December 29th. Do you think this could help or hurt the White House? Also, what do you think the public reaction will be?

If you are not a Native American you are an illegal immigrant. This is a step in the right direction.

You have to make some type of standard for immigration or people will just come as they please if they have no fear of penalty. The US didn't exist when Native Americans came thousands of years ago, by the way.

I have no strong opinions on this. Though, I am somewhat leaning towards it.

Its hard to track someone who is not documented, amirite? I see the message, well... as long as you are not causing trouble we do not care. Then again they are not payying taxes.... They can send their kids to school that cost people a few thousand dollars a year without payying a dime. That is not right.

Government shouldn't be regulating migration in the first place. But I'd say this is a step in the right direction.

In the idea of law and order, sustainable growth and controlling unemployment, taxation and government welfare they should.

All WASPs are immigrants.

No they are not, and that is an offensive term.

Are you a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant? :( Is that term offensive?

No I am not. I am White and Black with the White being mostly Irish and I am a descendant of sharecroppers. WASP is an offensive term, it is meant to be.

So you arent a WASP then. And its not offensive.

Yes really, it is meant to be.

Then why is it that every time I hear it used, there's no offensive connotation?

So a term meant to make fun of and degrade an entire group isn't offensive then? Everytime I hear it used that was the intent.

It doesnt even make sense as an insult.

Calling someone a WASP is just saying what they are.

You made the original claim they shouldn't be, explain.

You're the one who wants to expand government authority - in all honesty you should be the one justifying that; but a border isn't anything but an imaginary line on a map. It shouldn't be any more significant than that, and for a while it wasn't. For most of the US' existence we had an open border with all of Europe. None of my relatives who came here almost a century ago had to go through a bloated immigration department - they just hopped off a boat onto Ellis Island, registered their names and went on their way. Yet for purely xenophobic reasons the border has gotten more and more restrictive. And from a practical standpoint it doesn't make any sense at all. Protectionist measures only hurt the economy. For example, the real estate market is being artificially depressed because a lot of people who want to live here aren't being let into the country.

All this means, is cops will have to find a way to press charges.

This has no change on U.S. immigration what so ever.

Charges have already been placed, what they're saying is unless there is a conviction they won't have to worry about deportation. For example, if they were pulled over for a DUI but their lawyer got them off they would be in the clear.

It may not be the law but it could show how they plan to enforce the law in the future.

I like how the White House picks and chooses which laws to enforce. It's a good example to be setting.

Isn't it? Milton Friedman once said you can't have open borders and welfare. But hey, illegal immigrants work for slave wages (which is great for business, bad for the poor who are legal citizens). Doesn't take an expert to realize the dangers of allowing illegal immigrants in this country. We already take in more legal immigrants than the rest of the world combined. Lets take it to another level by having open borders and see our public spending go even higher. For several years we have payed more for education and healthcare than any other nation. Again, lets see those costs rise. Lets also see fewer resources such as water, food, and energy in this country. Need I continue? Anyone that defends open borders and thinks its fine is living in Wonderland. Ah, who cares about national sovereignty, we live in a world of infinte resources!
