One step closer to no more racism.

I vehemently oppose racism but even I think this is beyond silly. How can anyone be offended by this? He totally didn't mean any harm.
mhm Parents should have known better. Still, having a white child play MLK would probably make MLK proud.
I bet he meant well. It's just the whole "blackface" thing.MrPralineI think he meant well, too. Shame he was surrounded by morons. I just finished watching the video. There are actually two different reports on who complained. One is saying that a bunch of students complained. The other is that it was just one staff member.

I'll go out on a limb and say it was probably the staff member.
It's a problem because of what blackface painting means. In the past it was used as a tool of discrimination. The kid, and maybe the parents, didn't know this, but regardless there would definitely be some offended African Americans if they were allowed to do that. They should have sat him down and showed him how it was racist in the first place and then allow him to do his presentation sans blackface. It's a sad thing but we have to understand the beginnings of discrimination and how to keep them from coming back.
Come on, he was a little kid trying to look like a guy he admired. He's so young he probably didn't even know what he did "wrong" until they told him. I'm with Morgan Freeman on this one, stop talking about it and it'll go away.
I don't get why this is news too. The media still fanning the flame of racial hatred for ratings perhaps?
I agree. Ignoring the past won't get rid of it, but neither will suppressing it.It's a problem because of what blackface painting means. In the past it was used as a tool of discrimination. What is WRONG with kids like this?!
And by kids I'm talking about the school administration. Since, you know, that's what they're acting like.
>_>
What's the big deal? I was under the assumption that skin color means nothing. Maybe if he meant it in an offensive manner i'd agree but playing the part of a black man? I'd be more offended if he DIDN'T paint his face for the part in case he thought it would be offensive.JohnF111If skin color means nothing then he shouldn't have felt the need to paint his face in the first place.

Backface paintings meant something because the manner it was used in. This kid wasn't mocking anybody, he was actually doing it in a positive way. Anyway, the blackface back then wasn't the issue, it was the way the people portrayed blacks. So what, I can't dress up as a knight for Halloween because they used to kill people in the crusades? Muslims are offended (example for all the idiots that might attack), everyone go home. It's just stupid people, we are in the 21st century, get over it, being offended isn't cool anymore.
I feel bad for the black folk who continue to bring up the subject of racism, telling everybody how different they are, and so on. They are making the majority of African Americans look bad.

You aren't allowed to portray idols if they aren't of your skin color? That's bull.
I genuinely feel bad for the kid - I have a smaller sister, and I know how children are sensitive to -any- kind of input at that age.
Also, he's right (as opposed to the heads of the school): it's the exact opposite of disrespect. He's paying his honors to a man, that just happens to be black. He didn't choose MLK because of his color, he chose him because he agreed with his speech (that's what I understood, in any case).
Everything is racist to Black people it seems.DarkOfKnightHeck, I am probably racist for having black friends. My best friend is black AND Muslim. F*cking black people, amirite?
Geez what a load of bullocks. Just because painting oneself black was used for racist purposes in the past does not mean that is its only usage.
