Trip-hop is one of those genres that I never here people talk about when it has had some of the most critically acclaimed albums and bands. What's your thought on the genre?

Well it has Hip hop influence, however, the lyrics are a lot more spoken word, and poetic, it uses heavy atmosphere, and space rock sound with electronica. It usually sounds very desolate. Here are some examples

My GF LOVES Portishead. One of her fav bands. She also likes Tricky, Massive Attack, and some others I can't remember. I like em too, but she introduced me to it and I haven't listened to much.

It's cool' nothing I can get real into but I'm willing to give it a try. I know a lot of people won't agree with me or get upset at my statement. But it reminds me of true blue hip hop music.

I meant real hip hop music not that main stream BS you mostly hear on the radio and see on BET and MTV.

Ok so this thread inspired me to go listen to Portishead's self-titled album for the first time. After the first two tracks, this doesn't seem like something I'd be interested in but I'll give the rest of the album a chance anyway.

That debut album is considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time, its called Dummy. And it really is a fantastic piece of work.

I honestly didn't know (or really consider) Flunk or Elsiane, as trip hop. Anja is cool, but I havn't listened to a lot.

Well I think it didn't quite get the attention it deserved, but it was still extremely influential.

Also, I feel like I should recommend 8mm and Daughter Darling. They're more recent trip-hop bands, and I think they show that there's still some life left in the genre.

i don't think it's underrated. I think it's best left out of the main stream spotlight. once things get caught under the main steam machine they get their soul sucked away. trip hop is cool, not the primary thing I listen to.. but I'll take some scratch pickles or mix master mike any day. I've seen qbert once and Mix Master Mike three times now! I caught a demo with two of the scratch pickles but skipped their show to see qbert. I've had the opportunity to catch Z Trip many many times! his skills are amazing. DJ Radar is another top notch act to catch!
