Well it has Hip hop influence, however, the lyrics are a lot more spoken word, and poetic, it uses heavy atmosphere, and space rock sound with electronica. It usually sounds very desolate. Here are some examples

My GF LOVES Portishead. One of her fav bands. She also likes Tricky, Massive Attack, and some others I can't remember. I like em too, but she introduced me to it and I haven't listened to much.
All of those bands are great, and tricky is awesome too. Your GF has good taste :P[QUOTE="mexicangordo"]

It's cool' nothing I can get real into but I'm willing to give it a try. I know a lot of people won't agree with me or get upset at my statement. But it reminds me of true blue hip hop music.

True Blue hiphop? Ive never heard of that I meant real hip hop music not that main stream BS you mostly hear on the radio and see on BET and MTV.[QUOTE="jasonharris48"]

 that was greatOk so this thread inspired me to go listen to Portishead's self-titled album for the first time. After the first two tracks, this doesn't seem like something I'd be interested in but I'll give the rest of the album a chance anyway.TheHimuraThat debut album is considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time, its called Dummy. And it really is a fantastic piece of work.
I honestly didn't know (or really consider) Flunk or Elsiane, as trip hop. Anja is cool, but I havn't listened to a lot.Its pretty good. I like Elsiane, Flunk, and Anja Garbarek.

Well I think it didn't quite get the attention it deserved, but it was still extremely influential.
Also, I feel like I should recommend 8mm and Daughter Darling. They're more recent trip-hop bands, and I think they show that there's still some life left in the genre.
