So I just got back from the theatre seeing this movie and I must say it was very, very good. I was never interested in the books partialy because I had no idea what it was truly about. Someone told me one time that it was about a girl who solved murders, that is far from the truth. There is a lot more to it.

First of all, the acting in it is superb. Daniel Craig was great, it was nice seeing him in something other than James Bond, but the real star was Rooney Mara. She completely transformed herself into this character. After seeing the Social Network, it is hard to believe that Erica Albright is played by the same person that played Lizbeth Salander. They look like polar opposites. She in my opinion deserves the Oscar for Best Actress. I know Meryl Streep will be in the category but for once Ihave to say there is someone that deserves it more. And while I have seen all the films this year that are being talked about for Best Picture, I have to say this and War Horse are my top two films. They are the only movies that truly blew me away and its sad to think that most lilely The Artist will win because its "different." I know how the Academy thinks and The Artist is just what they want. But to me the clear choice would be one of those two, leaning toward Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

The real point of this topic though was to ask this, for those who have read the books and seen the movie how close is the book to the movie? The reason I ask is I really want to start reading this series and want to know if I go ahead and start with the next book will I miss anything? Or did David Fincher have a great book-to-film adaptation?

Is this sarcasm or is the Swedish one that much better? I'd like to see some girl top Rooney Mara's performance. That would be tough. And wait the books had a different ending or the movies did? Im confused.

cool. I hated the American one becuase Lizbeth ended up falling for the guy, a typical trait in hollywood films. In the Swedish one she just takes the money and bails, without even saying good bye to him, so badass. The entire (at least what I get from this series) is that women are as capable as men to be total badasses.

Can't answer I've only seen the 2011 version. And poster two posts above lol, how can you say the weather immersed you in the Swedish film but not this one? How was the weather different? It takes place in the same area.

Also, no one has answered my question. How close was the book to film? I want to start reading them and want to know if its ok to just jump straight to book two or if I should reread book 1 so I dont miss anything? How close was the adaptation?

Exactly! Finally, someone with sense. The ending was awesome. While it was sad, I have to say it fit it well. If you remember the line when she is playing chess with her guardian who had a stroke, she said she found a friend, that she was happy. It just shows that someone even as messed up as her, and who doesnt trust men can be changed, and it makes her human and vulnerable. Even the most messed up people in the universe can still fall for someone. And she was still pretty badass if you ask me.

Also, can someone please answer my question about book-to-film adaptation lol? I really want to start reading them.

I liked the original a hell of a lot, but I think Fincher's is definitely the superior adaptation.

I'll see it when it hits blu-ray, most likely. I've got a copy of the book sitting beside me and keep meaning to read the rest of it. I've also seen the Swedish version. Though I will confess my two reasons for not really caring if I see this new version in theatres - I'm not a big fan of David Fincher, and Rooney Mara's **bleep**ing eyebrows in trailers have creeped the hell out of me. I understand that the crazy look is part of Lizbeth's character, but Noomi Rapace manages to nail the character and look attractive at the same time. Rooney just makes my penis want to crawl away and hide.

Just because a character isnt attractive doesnt mean she is interesting. Not all women in movies are Victoria Secret models. I actually thought Rooney Mara managed to be pretty attractive considering what her characters was like. Disturbing yet sexy.

Thought it was okay. Some parts were better than the Swedish version, and some were worst. Can't decide which portrayal of Lisbeth I prefer. Although it might not have been true to the character from the book/Swedish adaptation, I like Mara playing her as a bit more vulnerable.

I have not watched either movie(I do want to watch both however) but I have read the entire trilogy and at the end of the first book
Lisbeth also falls in love with blomkvist. She even purchases a christmas gift for him (a portrait of Elvis that she thinks would fit with his cabin's interior design) but on her way to give it to him, she spots him and berger walking on the street kissing or something and she gets mad, throws his gift in the garbage and goes home. At that point the book ends.
Have you seen The Artist? It is definitely my favorite movie this year, and not because it is "different". I loved just about everything about the film. I found the story be bold, the acting was wonderful by both the lead actor and actress, and the musical score is the best I've heard all year long. The concept of it being a silent film whilst breaking the rules of one by adding sound and dialogue at key moments made me realize that the filmmaker's vision was NOT a brainless gimmick, but a clever ways of adding emotional depth to the film's narrative. I don't see what there is not to like about The Artist unless the viewer has a strict bias against films that show "age". If The Artist won Best Picture, it would have been rightfully so in my opinion.

On topic: I thought The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a great movie. The film had great writing, and I much prefer this version of Lizbeth over the Swedish version of the character. I think the actress definitely deserves at least a nomination for Best Actress. In comparison with the Swedish version, I think both are great movies, but I think I would give this version the edge.

Well if you read the book, she did have feelings for him, not feelings as in she was in love with him, but feelings as a friend. One of her only true good friends. Even in the book, it follows closely to the American version.

The US version makes it seem like she likes him, the book makes it just seem like he'd forgotten about her or something. Never saw the Swedish film.

Though in the second book it talks about how Lisbeth felt foolish for falling for Mikael which is what happened at the end of this movie. Thus being more faithful to the book/series.

Saw it yesterday, I liked the Swedish version a little better overall, but for an American remake it turned out better than I thought it would. I was half expecting the rape scene to be almost non-existent. Props to the director for not holding back on that.

I saw the foreign film on Netflix. It was good. Don't really get what all the hype is about. Its a good movie and good story, but I didn't find it all that great.

Maybe the book is better.

I've never read the books, but I saw the Swedish films and the American version and they were all really good. The only thing I can't decided is which Lisbeth I liked better; on one hand Mara was frail and muted and I liked that, but Repace's version was more tough and aggressive, which I think I liked a bit better overall. Of course I saw the Swedish version first so I may be more connected to the Rapace portrayal.

Alright thanks haha. I doubt the Swedish film could beat this. I love how so many people when given the choice between the American film version and foreign film version always say they like the foreign films better. It apalls me. There are some very good American films, people just like to seem smart as if saying the foreign film is better makes them more intellectual or cultured.

Game__Raider
It has nothing to do with a movie being American. It has to do with general consensus that originals are better because people tend to have seen them first and have better memories of original films. I can't fathom seeing a remake of LOTR in 10-15 years and having a better experience than originally.

Both were great. I think I'd have to give the edge to the Swedish version though. If only because it felt more natural. Don't get me wrong, Fincher did a great job and Mara was well chosen, but it didn't feel right having it set in Sweden with the original Swedish characters, yet they're speaking English.

But is it even fair to make the assumption that it's a remake? Both of the films are based on a book. Why can't there be more than one adaptation of something without labeling the later version a "remake?"

I haven't. I'm notspending money to see a movie I already seen pretty much. This movie is made for people who dislike reading subtitles.
