please base this on their overall directing work, not just one classic they made (e.g. Peter Jackson, The Wachowski Brothers)

here are my favourites:

Martin Scorsese - Goodfellas, The Departed, Gangs of New York etc

Ridley Scott - Gladiator, Thelma and Louise, American Gangster,

Zack Snyder - 300, Watchmen,

Matthew Vaughn - Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick Ass

Christopher Nolan - Memento, The Prestige, Batman Begins and obviously The Dark Knight

EDIT: how could i forget Quentin Tarantino?? - Inglorious Basterds, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill

EDIT 2: and Michael Mann- Heat, Public Enemies, Collateral

if i had to go with one, I'd say Christopher Nolan, with Scorsese a close second, cos they are both amazingly consisently good.

Clint Eastwood

Paul Thomas Anderson: Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, Punch Drunk Love - I don't think there's a more original filmmaker at the moment.

Christopher Nolan - hasn't made a bad film yet. Very talented and he's barely 40.

Tarantino: I like all his films except Death Proof.

Stanley Kubrick.

I see quite a few mentions for Hitchcock. I haven't seen much of his work but I had watched Rear Window last night. It was really disappointing. I hope people are wrong when they say it is one of Hitchcock's best. I liked North by Northwest a lot better.

Steven Spielberg

He filled my childhood with joy, and has done great moves in pretty much every genre.

He literally invented the summer blockbuster concept.
