Just wondering how many people here are in the autistic spectrum. I personally have mild aspergers Definition: Asperger's syndrome (AS), is a pervasive developmental disorder commonly referred to as a form of "high-functioning" autism. Individuals with Asperger's are considered to have a higher intellectual capacity while suffering from a lower social capacity. The term "Asperger's syndrome" was coined by Lorna Wing in a 1981 medical paper. She named it after Hans Asperger, an Austrian psychiatrist and pediatrician whose work was not internationally recognized until the 1990s. more info is here http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=212

I don't have anything like that. At least, not that I'm aware of.

From Encyclopedia Dramatica's article on the subject: As Fad Since its introduction into the public knowledge, Asperger's has become somewhat of a fad for those seeking to garner attention unto themselves. In the fine, hallowed tradition of disease whores everywhere, many of today's youth take it on themselves to relay their slight feelings of eccentricity, difference, shyness or other inadequacies to discover, minus the aid of a qualified MD, that they are victims of Aspberger's. Belittling those who actually suffer from the disease with their attention-whoring, the sole motivation for these self-diagnoses seems to be the desire to excuse their **** nature and claim the disease's diagnostic as "having greater than average intelligence." Edit: Look how popular it is! A poll...

lol so from a sample of 100 votes you take that as meaning people in general suggest they have it when they dont? Most people dont know what it is. People who suggest they have syndromes or medical things but dont are idiots I would hope you would assume people are truthful about things rather than stupid polls where people are asnwering questions they dont the full information about and are just guessing.

I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I'm saying its massively (by orders of magnitude) overreported by people who have self-diagnosed.

I forgot what the traits were so no. But that's not why I say it's a joke. Look what site he used. Encyclopedia Dramatica. That site was made from a couple of guys from /b/ or something. Mostly everything has to do with fads and stuff on /b/. Everything thing on there is a joke. Trust me, check it out if don't believe me. Everything is made fun of.

You know, you get to a point where you keep segregating, and deliniating all these degrees of mental disorder...at some point of another you're just going to start making stuff up for every little kind of eccentricity.

I'm not saying aspergers doesn't exist - it's clearly a well defined mental state. I just wonder at what point we'll come up with a medical disease for "being kind of a weirdo".

I personally only suffer from the higher intellectual capacity. I don't have any other of those symptoms. :)

I don't think this should be classified as a disease. I mean c'mon...a guy could just be shy and not given a fair chance by people...where is the line between shyness and "aspergers?"

Not being able to go through the cleaner isle because of the smell, going mad over the sound of an engine (even if it's a lawnmower), not being able to fully comprehend the danger of certain situations, slurred speech, poor motor skills, having behaviors similar to OCD, and others.

Which are all the symptoms I have. Read up on it before coming to a conclusion.

I've read extensively about this.

Anyone could dislike the smell of cleaners.

The sound of loud engines (especially those loud ones used for cutting down weeds) can get on anyone's nerve

The third, fourth, and fifth are unique yeah. Still, a lot of the symptoms are things everyday people have. I think it would be better if we didn't classify everything because of the stigmatization society puts on people. Another example is depression. If I'm depressed, why is that different? Why is that a disease? Millions of people suffer from depression, shouldn't it be normal then?

Anyway, I agree that there's plenty of falsely reported cases of Aspergers due to the vauge description of symptoms. I'm one of the people that actually have it (which might be a minority in this situation). And just to point it out, Aspergers is a mental illness, not a disease.

I believe what defines Aspergers is an intense interest in a niche category. I know I have it.

Aspergers doesn't show as much on the Internet as it does in real life. Whenever I discuss the topic, Organization XIII music will play in my head...

The loud engines get on my nerves even if I'm far away. I feel like they're creeping up on me...

You are incorrect; Asperger's self-diagnosis is the new black :(

I have back-up, mind you. And to aid me are these "symptoms" (no other word)

  1. Qualitative impairment in social interaction;
  2. The presence of restricted, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors and interests;
  3. Significant impairment in important areas of functioning;
  4. No significant delay in language;
  5. During the first three years of life, there can be no clinically significant delay in cognitive development such as curiosity about the existing environment or the acquisition of age appropriate learning skills, self-help skills, or adaptive behaviors (other than social interaction); and,
  6. The symptoms must not be better accounted for by another specific pervasive developmental disorder or schizophrenia.
  1. I don't really know how I'd actually exemplify it here, but if you met me in real life and knew me for quit some time, you'd know that of me.
  2. I do in fact do weird things. I eat pizza by, um, dissecting it, and the name says it all.
  3. Had those f'ing speech cl@sses in middle school...
  4. Again, don't know how to exemplify it.
  5. F*ck, do you expect me to remember this far back!
  6. Again, back-up.

She named it after Hans Asperger, an Austrian psychiatrist and pediatrician whose work was not internationally recognized until the 1990s. more info is here http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=212AcidJiles

there you go :P and no im not autistic

Seen it in school records, I'm sure they consulted medical professionals.

[QUOTE="xaos"][QUOTE="AcidJiles"][QUOTE="xaos"]From Encyclopedia Dramatica's article on the subject: As Fad Since its introduction into the public knowledge, Asperger's has become somewhat of a fad for those seeking to garner attention unto themselves. A poll...GeForce2187
lol so from a sample of 100 votes you take that as meaning people in general suggest they have it when they dont? Most people dont know what it is. People who suggest they have syndromes or medical things but dont are idiots I would hope you would assume people are truthful about things rather than stupid polls where people are asnwering questions they dont the full information about and are just guessing.

I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I'm saying its massively (by orders of magnitude) overreported by people who have self-diagnosed.

I got diagnosed after they hooked me up to a machine thing... with all of those electrode things stuck on me. Don't know how that daignoses it exactly but yeah, I was like 6 or 7.

That's not how it's diagnosed, I was diagnosed by a phsycologist at Yale. Maybe your thinking of "Tumor" not "Aspergers syndrome".

Everyone is improved in certain ways and limited in others.

There is a kid in my class who has it. No one knew at first and his voice sounds really weird so we all laughed at him whenever he said something. He is really smart but has no social capacity AT ALL. He walks around the classroom sometimes and just looks at everything. You seem to have more social capacity than the average person afflicted with aspergers because the kid in my class seems like he wouldnt even be able to write a simple thread without it sounding all weird.
