well...ok first no not prince that guy is an idiot, and there are a lot of ridiculous guitarists out there today, i personally would have to say perhaps the guitarist that backed up skynard, i mean come on how many people that you know can pull off 5 minute guitar solos that perfectly, and as for pioneering music hendrix no doubt, this does not make him the best, it just means that he was the first one to do certain things with the guitar, you can argue all you want that other people would have eventually got to do what he did, but face it he did it first so he is the pioneer of guitarists, and as for best guitarist who backed up skynard

Is he considered to be the best by most people or just by you?

There isn't one person who's universally considered "best", because that would throw the entire concept of music into flux, because it all comes down to opinion. I believe the fastest guitarist in the world is Michael Angelo Batio (please, correct me if I'm wrong), but I really don't think that makes him the "best" guitarist in the world...

People often consider Jimi Hendrix the best...

But I'd have to say either Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page

No one will give a straight answer on this topic. Everyone will go for who they like best.Everyone will not agree on one person.

I hope people don't say the guys from Lynard Skynard becasue of Freebird... because as great as a song that is, the band was not that great. You can't judge a band because you heard their song on Guitar Hero

Some people will choose wankers like Clapton and Hendrix because they were popular 30 or 40 years ago, which, as we all know instantly means they're good. (sarcasm)

Some people will choose the fast but utterly soulless guitar players like Yngwie Malmsteen and that cow from Dragonforce because, well, they play fast.

As for who is actually more skilled, well, people don't seem to realize there's a lot more to the guitar than setting them on fire and playing arpeggios at 300 BPM.

In my opinion, it's probably J Mascis or David Pajo.

It seems to me that all the guitarist mentioned so far only playor mostly play electric guitars. No one is mentioning any acoustic guitar players.

That's because most people are familiar with only electric guitarists. In the acoustic world, names like John Williams or Andres Segovia would pop up instead.

True, RS forgets a lot of skilled guitarists; The list just consists of mostly members of famous groups, which is why I don't trust it very much. We all know that there are plenty of great guitarists who haven't been discovered.

To Sexy_Pirate: The Asian guitarist is Herman Li.
