In terms of soaring popularity, universal recognition of this artists/bands talent? Do we have a Michael Jackson, Beatles or an Elvis of our generation?

If Justin Timberlake would release another album I would say him for the MJ of this generation... As for Beatles, not really anyone I can think of... Eminem's career is pretty close to Elvis', though

I don't think there is any. MJ, Beatles and Elvis impacted the industry and changed it drastically. While there are a lot of popular bands/artists these days, I don't think they've done anything to change the music industry.

Jay-Z was the first artist to come to mind, he's been enormously popular for 13-14 years. I still wouldn't put him on the same level of MJ, The Beatles, or Elvis though.

Aerosmith and Metallica are really the only popular, long lasting, influential bands close to this generation -though many would say they are closer to last generation (like the Stones) -Nirvana is reminiscent of many of the people that died on "the day the music died" (buddy Holly, big bopper, etc.)...short career, but influential

There isn't one. Music has long since been fractured to the point that it seems unlikely someone could fill such a role.

I'm going to have to say that Justin Timberlake is the next MJ. He is an incredibly talented vocalist, can dance extremely well, and is recognized by 2/3 of the globe.

As for the Beatles, we'll have to wait a looooooong time to see a new version of the Beatles.

And Elvis, well he wasn't anything special in the first place.

There hasn't been an artist who's music really influenced, and changed the industry, yet. Think about it.There hasn't been an artist this decade that owns it, except when it comes to Rap it's Lil Wayne and his sillyness freestyles.

Nobody seems to fit the bill precisely. Maybe it's just that the boundaries those 3 broke are hard to replicate in scale.

Beyonce, of course.

Metallica and Radiohead are still considered somewhat fringe, and they are no where near as commercialized as Beyonce is.

Beyonce is all over TV and magazines 24/7. She's the current "face" of this era. She's the most visible person in entertainment.

That's the probably the only one, but she's not to MJ status though. She's a R&B not POP, and last time I checked Pop was different than R&B.

I pretty much agree with this. I haven't heard a band as inspiring or in fact, good, as the 3 you listed at all. I just can't bring myself to get into modern music.

Let me break it down. R&B is like a light version of Hip Hop, and of course it uses synths. to fulfill every need, and the occasional samples if the producers wants to spend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v3I9U_luGU Pop is like a light version of Rock, but through the times with the impact of Disney, and other companies I'm not even going to mention. They use Pop was a market to promote actress to singer type of **** and the lack of true musicianship. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M11SvDtPBhA As for the demographic, well it's pretty damn obvious. R&B appeals to the Black community, and Pop appeals to the Others, but mainly Whites. This is awfully weird, but this has been like this for years, and MJ and other black 80s Pop singers changed that, and in the 90s this ended.

No one can replace any of those, but Brittney Spears could be. Lady Gaga seems to be pretty popular. But all these new rock bands could never beat the Beatles. All new Rock Bands have to ad in swears or smut and the songs have no meaning. The only meaning in songs today is "I miss you girl!, Why did you leave me girl?"

But unlike MJ, The Beatles, and Elvis Bittney Spears doesn't even write he own music. Lady Gaga hasn't been arround long enough, although she is really inventive and ambitious - so time will tell. I hate to sound stuck in the past but I do agree that nobody these days really compare's to 'the greats'.

Yeah well we can go into the history of why it's called pop but what I'm trying to say is Pop and R&B are quickly becoming hard to distinguish, like Jay Sean's Down, is that Pop or R&B?

I was thinking more of a soaring popularity / universal recognition. Quality wise, of course neither of these would compare to - say - Beatles

Ya...those are all popular...better than other choices in here...I was going more for longevity and influence with my pics...but I can see where you are going with it -all 3 of yours are known around the world, though I doubt anyone would say Britney has had any influence on Music as a whole.

Hard to say...different era than the Beatles or Elvis...times were different as far as sales, promotion, TV, music videos, concerts, etc. But all 3 are among the greatest musical acts in modern history I would probably give the #1 spot to Elvis just based on revolution and influence and longevity (people still listen and appreciate his music...will have to wait and see on MJ)

I agree with Justin Timberlake, that man is an idol for ANYBODY who claims to be a man, and every woman could not say they would not want to be with him.

BUT...as for that super, nobody really comes to mind. Radiohead, Justin Timberlake, or dare he say it?.......William Hung. :P

There's simply too much music out there these days for any one artist to be that influential. If any band comes out with a decent sound, there's ten more out the next month releasing the same stuff and it's already become a trend.

In terms of popularity, Lady GaGa is a damn good contender.

But, she's still far too young, it's too soon to tell.

And Madonna doesn't exactly count since she was from Michael's era.
