Who owns the moon?

So the U.S. basically landed on the moon first and planted their flag

This reminds me of the image of a pirate landing on a new land, planitng his flag, and claiming the land as his own. So if we humans start to colonize the moon, who has the rights to the land? Who decides who can build where? Who decides what can and cant be done? Who owns the moon?

Well the Moon has an abundance of a certain form of helium which energy potential is so high, supposedly one kiloton of it is enough to power the US for some while. Pretty much you solved the world's energy problem. Course it'll take time to develop.

Well, Russia is aggressively staking its claims in the Arctic which is making Canada and Sweden and Norway a tad bit worried (us as well). But if Russia wants the Arctic, then we get the Moon.

Moon belongs to 12 or 16 countries so far, when they colonise (which i doubt)- they will divide the territories, US will have a big piece of the pie, next Russia, China, India, Japan & EU.

No one owns the moon.

They agreed on a treaty stating that no one could claim ownership on it, which in my opinion, is for the best.

In fact, our manned long range space faring technology has regressed so much over the last 30 years I doubt we'll even return to the moon in our lifetimes. We certainly couldn't go back now if we wanted to. And you can thank NASA and their dead-end space shuttle program for that.

No one can own something in space huh? In reality I am sure it's only a matter of time before one of us SuperNations just TAKES something, like half the moon. Humankind kinda has a history (as in world history) and a bad habit of doing just that. We don't own dirt or rock or rivers or sky do we? Well, apparently we DO!!

We do not own land, we borrow it from our children.
