I think that European languages are the hardest to master worldwide and Asians', the easiest
The reason why a non-asian would find japanese or chinese language challenging is because they have no knowledge of their writing system.

Shouldn't that be reason enough to declare those languages more challenging than others? To me, it seems easier to learn a language that utilizes symbols for phonetic sounds than a language that uses symbols for entire words.
[QUOTE="jointed"]German was extremely easy for me to learn, but I haven't tried Latin yet. They're not that hard if you listen in school and learn the basics of latin and german...

Most languages in southern Europe, such as French, Italian and Spanish are very, very influenced by latin...So if you know basic latin, you'll be able to learn them without any greater problems.

Those three and Portugese make up the four principal languages with Latin roots.

Oops for the two of you....
I have no clue, I have never tried to master one...double_decker
Try to master swedish:) that would be awesome
Well English is one of the hardest European languages according to some, but others would say that some of the eastern European languages are harder. German and Spanish are fairly straightforward, and French is slightly more difficult.cjek
IMO English is probably one of the easiest languages to learn. If you want to master Dutch, thats gonna be a hard job for someone who doesn't speak it.:P

well that depends...European languages are not hard at all.Try Turkish,Arabic....hard languages there are.
Actually it depends on the person's native language's family.Altaic peoples can learn altaic languages faster than indo-Europeans for example.IMO
I know its selfish but pretty much everyone i need to speak to speaks english, so why learn another language?
I hate french so much...

only because we were raised with english and learned it by hearing it.. ask someone who is learning english how easy it is..You mean the easiest?
Doesn't Chinese have like 5000 characters, 7 different languages, and like 80 different dialects?
Im taking Latin and I think its really easy. if French and spanish are like it, I dont think it can be that hard.
Now African dialects or Asian languages are hard. They have random clicks in the middle of words

Latin was used long ago, during the Roman Empire times and after. Italian and Spanish come from Latin, they're not hard to learn. When i was about age 9 i could speak italian very well, and i learned it from the TV
You're absolutely right, knowing more than one language does not "broaden your horizon" or "give you more perspective on things" it's fairly pointless. Learn one language and come to know it well and use it. Simple.Kev_Boy
No. Unless you plan to stay within the US/UK/Australia, for the rest of your life, you need another language - you'll probably get by in Brasil with English, but if you have some Portuguese on you, people will accept you more, be more willing to help you, you'll be able to find the small, interesting places etc.
For jobs, in Europe at least, it always helps having as many languages as possible - hotels like being able to communicate with foreign customers, restaurant people will like/tip you more, etc etc.
