Napoleon is the most interesting one because he had just policies unlike the rest of the list. He believed in freedom, the rising of talents into higher classes, he despised the noble class, ETC. Napoleon was an overall great man.

True. If you watch this video showing the population growth from 1 AD, you'll see that at the time of Ghengis Khan (1200ish) and the Mongols that a crapload of people died.

Explain this! This is a photo of Napoleon and a British man. Not only is he significantly smaller than the recoat, but he is attempting to eat a globe. Short and foolish.

Yes, then he got exiled... Then he miraculously escaped St. Elba, managed to dodge all the British boats monitering him, then he somehow took a long march to Paris with people volunteering to march behind him to overthrow the monarchy. When the cops came to arrest Napoleon they bowed to him. The story is something you would expect in a hollywood film.

How can he be a conqueror, if he got wasted by the Russians? Even when he had a larger military?

I dunno. I havent researched Genghis kan....

BUT Alexander the Great ruled the KNOWN world. at that time a few city-states was really powerful. After he destroyed Darius, he merged the two great powers of the world, then expanded his power to India. He was great in his time. GK was great in his time. You need a real history buff to decipher who ruled a bigger empire relative to the world at the time. Also you need to take in to fact that Alexander did most of the battling with his troops. Not sure if GK did.

Genghis Khan is obviously the correct answer.

Hitler had a good "leader" attitude, though his methods of dealing with the Jewish/anyone that didn't agree with him were *obviously* very flawed. But despite his bad wrap, he was still (IMO) more respectful than the likes of Sadam Hussein.

But still, he had nothing on Genghis Khan. Khan basically wrote the book on modern warfare tactics. (in fact, there IS a book about his tactics, and the military uses some of his tactics to this day)

Genghis Khan > any other conqueror.

What exactly are you basing that on? Toppling two totalitarian regimes and chasing Iraq out of Kuwait in the Gulf War? If we were really such "conquerors", we would've simply taken over Iraq and Afghanistan instead of trying to install democracies there.

Alexander the great. He toppled the worlds biggest empire in the form of the Persians. Spread the Greek ideas to the rest of the world and created the one of the worlds most prosperous and most advanced period in humanity in the form of the Hellenistic period and set up the birth of the roman empire. There is no other choice.

Alexander the Great.

According to the History magazine, Alexander the great has achived more in the world history than any other man.

What people dont take into consideration here, is the timeframe they used, who fought the hardest battles ?, that would be Alexander the great, defeating armies 6 times his own force, on their choice of battleground, even on a wide open plane, giving no terrain advantages to him. It only took him 4-5 years to conquer the Persian empire, before his 25th birthday he had done this. So being so young puts him in a special category, he was 20 years old when he started the campaign, it makes you wonder how a 20 year old boy/man can do all this, when other great commanders are allways older and should have recieved more experience than him.

Im sure Genghis used way more time, he also had generals doing a lot of the conquering for him, if i remember right he had 3 or more armies under difrent generals heading in each their direction to conquer. he was more than twice the age of Alexander when he died, and the mongol empire grew a lot more after his death.

Alexander lead his own armie at all times, and fought in every single battle, starting out with only 35.000 men when he crossed into Persia.

Alexander is the father of strategy, Napoleon said: you can not understand military strategy without studying Alexander.

Well I think that Alexander was the greatest conqueror, he has been the only one who conquered many places, and was one of the few that didn't loose wars. For example I heard, when the news was talking about northern afganastain and pakastan, "this place hasen't been governed since alexander the great" and I have heared many other things like this, it is just after his death the largest empire the world had ever seen was split between lots of generals.

But from all these commanders, Alexander is the only one that hasent been defeated in battle.

Hannibal, Napoleon, Caesar, Genghis Khan, Pyrrhus.... all have been defeated in battle.

Genghis Khan and his generals has conquered the biggest empire out of them, but he is not the greatest general, he did have the most effective weapon for it's time tho, wich made it possible to conquer so much, the tactics used were pretty simple, a bit covardly but very effective.

I agree, for his short life and short amount of time it took him to conquer so much, puts him at the top in my opinion. And all these other big generals have learnt from him, he lived before their time, Genghis Khan lived around 1500 years after Alexanders time, and had Alexander lived to be the same age as Genghis Khan, 64-65 years old, meaning he would have lived 32-33 years more, then he could have conquered a lot more.

After conquering Persia, he got enormous amounth of wealth and manpower, and after conquering parts of india he got war-elphants. Imagine how big a empire he could have exstended if he had lived on for 33 more years, his son would also have comed to age without being killed, so the empire could have stayed as one under his son's rule, after Alexanders death.

The power of a military, or unit, or detatchment etc. is not measured by size. Just look at the SAS track record. In the 90's Isreal avoided conflict with Iraq because they were told SAS would be deployed in the area to deal with the problems.

Ghengis Khan killed his brother. But there's nothing funny about that... Hehehehehe. Also I think Stalin should possibly be on the list as well, he somehow gained control of all of those Eastern European countries without Britain, France or America stopping him. Also Russia were destroyed by Japan in the early 1900's.

I thought he was a fictional character, though...

Well either way, whatever they fought for, however noble the cause, it was lost in real life.
