The other night I stopped by a gas station after having my regular workout at the gym to pick up a Dragonfruit vitamin water for the ride home. I find the last two on the top shelf and grab the first one. As I do, the next and last one slides down the slot and hits the small piece of plastic at the bottom that stops it, however since there were no more behind it to stop the bottom of the bottle from getting kicked out by the momentum of it's slide, it does a forward flip and falls only to explode everywhere upon impact.

My question is this: who'd responsible for cleaning up the mess? As a customer, is it my job? I've had similar jobs where I've been told by the manager it is always the employee's duty to clean up customers' mistakes.

So who's right? I'd like to hear what you guys would do in this situation?

It sounds like it was a design flaw, and it should be the employee's duty to clean it up.

The employee should clean it up, but make sure you inform them about it.

Well, the employee's being paid to clean up customers' mistakes, but it would have been courteous of you to offer to help.

Actually I ended up cleaning up the entire mess as I felt so bad for causing her undo trouble, plus I was angry at myself for being so clumsy. I just felt so bad for her....

Actually she was pretty cute, but she barely spoke English. Plus, she was not pleased at all and was still a bit pissed even after I cleaned it up, so it probably wasn't the best time to ask for her #...:P

Employee as long as you didn't do it on purpose (of course if you did I don't think you'd be cleaning it up either).

From a managers point of view you always clean up after the customer, and keep on their good side. Yea short term you might not profit, but long term you'll get it back. There's a Stake n shake near where I use to live that was fairly rude to me once because I asked for a fresh pot of coffee so I never went back there, and then my friends stopped going there also. Had she whipped up a fresh pot (or had said no in a more polite manner) they would of probably made a couple hundred more over the period of the next year considering me and 5 friends would of popped in there at least once a month.

Most managers ignore how much further being nice can get you with consumers. Just making your employees act in a chipper mood can increase sales dramatically.

I'd feel like a total ass if I just left the mess there.. so I'd probably offer to clean the mess up; regardless if it was my fault or not.

Good points, but getting terrible service at someplace is different from someone else having to clean up a mess created by me. I know it's right from a business perspective to subscribe to the "customer's always right" motto; I suppose I just felt horrible on a personal level.....even to the extent that I don't want to go back to that particular gas station.

Still though, she should've helped clean it up as well, but she just sat there with herrap music blaring. I think she had to mop though....muahahaha . She wasn't rude or anything, just very apathetic.

I feel responsible, and though I should, like your boss says the employee should be the one to do it. Though if your kind heart interjects, it isn't out of the norm.

It is your responsibility to report the mess to an employee and the employee's responsibility to clean it up.

It's your fault, but don't feel the need to clean it up. If you're at a gas station, chances are, the workers have nothing to do at all. :P

The employee should clean the mess. However, my opinion is that the customer responsible should pay for the damaged product.
