OMG. Brings back memories.
Newton by far and no one even came close, the guy changed our understanding of the universe more than any other person and that was before he was even 25 years old. He makes me feel every lazy.
Wolls
No way...Einstein made discoveries about things that had yet to be observed using only his equations and a new way of thinking.
Isaac Newton did incredible things but all of them involved explaining things that he had observed around him. Mr. Einstein took an idea like gravity and explained exactly what it was and how it worked...discovering a 4th dimension beyond our perception in the process...that is incredible.
Both Newton and Einstein brought revolutionary theories...I think the greatist scientist of our time though is Stephen Hawking
I dunno who the greatest is, but Feynman gets my vote for most awesome scientist.thriteenthmonke
QFT,
Feynman is the first truly cool scientist.
I am obviously. Einstein had Relationship issues (Really really bad ones), Newton found his revolution by getting hit on the head, Darwin was themonkey from The Wild Thornberry's on Nickelodeon HAAA!!!! Had to throw that in because I had nothing to say about him.
Now on a more serious note, I would have to vouch for either the Egyptians, Dogon or for single person, I would have to vouch for Carl Zeiss. While not completely science genius, he is a responsible for building and crafting the lenses for the best Telescopes we have in Space. Without him, we'd probably still be seeing space in Standard Definition. There are other great Lens Crafters (No pun intended) out there, but I think Carl Zeiss is the best one due to his work on Great Space Telescopes.

Newton said himself that the apple did not hit him, he actually said that he was inspired by watching an apple fall. Also Newton was apparently not the most likeable person and not a lot of people got on with him.
I'd say that Einstein is ceratinly one of the greatest scientists as he changed peoples perception of time, gravity etc.

Typical Response. I wouldn't admit to being smacked in the head by an apple either. Especially if it's the source of my revolutionary idea. Einstein may have been Book Smart but boy was he surely wasn't Common Sense Smart. He was completely devoted to work so I could hardly call him the greatest regardless of his efforts.Newton said that the earth was revolving around the sun, not the other way round. So they said, "well, how does it work?". Newton said, "let me get back to you on that". He found that existing science wasn't enough. So, he decided to invent calculus. In a few months. I think that gives him a pretty high score.
I don't understand why one person has to be better than the other.
Without prior knowledge from other scientists, none of those guys would have discovered what they did in their time.
It's naiive to put them on this rock star status and not give credit to those who helped pave the way for their discoveries.
They all 'stood on the shoulders of giants.'
But even though it does have applications in science, calculus was a mathematical invention. D:Newton said that the earth was revolving around the sun, not the other way round. So they said, "well, how does it work?". Newton said, "let me get back to you on that". He found that existing science wasn't enough. So, he decided to invent calculus. In a few months. Mathematics is a science. . .
Newton never was hit on the head. The idea of hiw beign hit on the head with an apple falling from a tree is merely due to popularization of the idea. IT never happened.I am obviously. I don't really think that there is any one particular greatest scientists. They basically all worked together. One discovery leading into another discovery and so on. (I don't think Darwin was even a scientist.)
On that list, definitely Newton.
Theokhoth
Newton wouldn't have made his contributions without the contributions of:
-Nicholas Copernikus
-Tycho Brahe
-Johanas Keppler
-Galileo Galili
And Hawking and Einstein wouldn't have had their discoveries without all the other previous physicists. Same goes for Brian Greene.
And we wouldn't have had any of this information without Ptolemy.
And we wouldn't have had any of this without Socrates.
And we wouldn't have had Socrates without cave people looking at the stars thinking they were gods.
And we wouldn't have the cave people without the monkeys that preceded them.
And we wouldn't have the monkeys without the mammals that preceded those.
And we wouldn't have those mammals without the dinosaurs.
And we wouldn't have the dinosaurs without the amphibians.
And we wouldn't have the amphibians if we didn't have the fish to decend from.
And we wouldn't have the fish without the simple life forms.
And we wouldn't have those without bacteria.
And we wouldn't have bacteria without water and DNA.
And we wouldn't have water and DNA if the comets hadn't rained into the earth.
And we wouldn't have anything if the earth never happened.
And we woulnd't have anything if the big bang never happened.
You see, it's naiive to think that there can possibly be one 'greatest scientist of all time.'
They all stood on the shoulders of those previous.

Exactly my point.
... And Einstein did make himself a sandwich.
